Good story alert! After those election results, I think we all could use one.
This weekend I had the pleasure of finally meeting two people in person I've considered extended family for several years now: Captain Pete and his wife Kathye.
The story of how they became family friends is both tragic and very unusual. In 1994 my aunt and uncle were on a cruise on the Achille Lauro, when due to an engine explosion the ship caught fire and later sank in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia. After being saved from the lifeboats by a tanker that didn't have the space or the resources for all of those passengers, my aunt and uncle ended up being in a group of passengers that was picked up by the USS Gettysburg. And guess who the Captain was? The wonderful Pete! It's been 23 years now and a certain group of "survivors" still meets every 2 years. Aside from that, Pete and Kathye basically adopted my sister when she visited them during her year in the states, they visited my parents in Aurich and I've received Christmas gifts from them without ever having met them. I'm so happy that now I finally did!! They are amazing people and I hope that one day I get to visit them in Rhode Island and spend more time with them.
People, this is proof that from bad things actually very very wonderful things can come. On days like today, remember this. Think about your family, your friends, the human connections you're making in life and how love will always be stronger than hate ❤
