“When I was a little girl, my dad was a big believer in the importance of exercising our minds through memorization. He taught me that our minds and our thoughts are powerful. One scripture we memorized together was his favorite: ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths’ (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Just this morning, as a 29-year-old woman, I was driving in my car and my thoughts, the very things my dad taught me were so powerful, became very negative. Discouragement began to overcome me but then came into my mind those familiar words, ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart... .’ And in that moment, I knew it was true. I needed to trust, I needed to believe and I needed to stop depending on my own understanding. You see, I thought my dad was just teaching me about memorization but he was actually doing something much more important; he was planting the Word in my heart. Perhaps he was even more wise as a young dad in his mid-20s than I previously estimated and he knew that small seed he planted in my heart would bring forth fruit years later in the moment his not-so-little-anymore girl needed it most. Maybe he didn’t. But for me, today, those words were a gift that had been given to me many years before. And that is really what the Word of God has been for me: a gift that keeps on giving, on and on, again and again. It is a gift we can give each other and a gift that we can receive. It is a gift of new friends found within its pages, passages that come to our minds right when we need them most and stories that help us feel we are never alone. His Word is a gift that can be opened over and over, a gift that never gets old.” — Morgan Jones @mojo7795
