The Ideologue (2016-2017)
In this reinventionist artwork, El A'awar presents a surrealist object in the sky morphed into what appears to be a bug or a reptile's head. Hence, the title of the artwork could hint that this visual describes the boggling nature of ideologues, as being dangerously or inconvenietly uncompromising and dogmatic while being adherents to their given ideologies. With its underlying theme of sarcasm, the artwork reflects on the current world events where diehard ideologies could be argued as being the cause of all world problems. Authoritarian regimes that had forgotten the rights of the commoners have led to anti-regime uprisings, such as in the east where we had witnessed the 'Arab Spring.' The resultant chaos paved way for whoever is more cunning and powerful, even for those ultra-conservative fanatics to begin fabricating lies and malpractices falsely in the name of religion, while stemming their ideologies from defunct and inhuman cultural habits, feeding on the ignorant minds of the masses to gain blind followers in order to establish a dangerous terrorist state such as ISIS. The overspread crime and terror in many parts of the world, falsely attributed to all migrants by the west's alt right, have exposed the lackadaisical situation of leftist politics in failing to restore world order, and so the populist masses have turned towards the deceiving campaigns of the alt right who have exposed their true colors being not as virtuous as they had campaigned. In the words of Russel Kirk, the ideologue "thinks of politics as a revolutionary instrument for transforming society and even transforming human nature. In his march toward Utopia, the ideologue is merciless." Aren't we experiencing those very words in every aspect of our lives today? While El A'awar would like to leave his audience to process this artwork further on their own, it is interesting to note that this artwork was made from a photographic detail of the Church of All Saints in Florence, Italy, which was also founded by disobedient ideologues known as the Humiliati. How far do we aim up towards the sky with our Ideologies? Can one grab the moon by climbing a a ladder...?!!
