A few syringes, and an endless amount of bottle caps, straws, bags, tampons and any other plastic item you can think of later, and still not a dent made on this beach. About 10 minutes into me starting the clean up, two women came onto the beach with a child and I overheard one of them saying to the other about how they had left their cup on the table the day before (the first thing I had picked up). They proceeded to thank me for my efforts over and over and one of them started telling me how she loves the ocean and the beach SO much and can't stand people who litter...While they seemed super sweet and genuinely thankful for my efforts, it left me feeling a bit sour. How can you say you love something so much and that it means so much to you, but can't even have the decency to clean up your own mess? What kind of example do you set? Maybe seeing one person struggling to clean up everyone else's mess will make them think twice next time. One person can't do it all alone, be a decent human being and do your part when possible.
