Got to wait a few days for the lime mortar to cure so here's the progress so far - not long to go. #forge #littlewoodham #17thcentury #blacksmith #livinghistory

I'm a very happy chappy - popped up to see Phil at the Reclamation Centre Colchester and to buy this lovely hand forged old English fifth foot anvil !! This is perfect for the Little Woodham forge - I'm really looking forward to demonstrating on this and showing how a fifth foot anvil is used πŸ‘ It was great to meet Phil and it's a fantastic reclamation yard - if ever you're in the area then pop in and take a look around πŸ‘πŸ’₯πŸ”¨ #anvil #littlewoodham #blacksmith #iron #forge

The first fire in the new forge !!! Still got quite a bit more brickwork to do but a number of small fires like this will help to dry the lime mortar properly before I get a full forging fire going, if I don't then the water in the lime mortar expands and the mortar POPs quite spectacularly ! #blacksmith #17thcentury #forge #littlewoodham #livinghistory

My 7 year old daughter started the forge this morning for the first time - the start of her becoming a blacksmith πŸ‘πŸ’₯πŸ”¨ #forge #17thcentury #livinghistory #blacksmith #littlewoodham

The kiln has been opened! A very successful firing has provided us with more galley pots than we could have asked for! And many new items, such as small voiders and water jugs! Many of these will be used within the village but a lot will go to our gift shop for visitors to purchase.
Well done Master Potter!

The craft day was a fantastic success again this year, raising more funds than ever in order to keep Little Woodham looking wonderful and giving it's volunteers more opportunities to entertain and educate visitors.
If you missed it this year, don't worry, it'll be back in 2018!

219/365 In Sync. Couple of weekends ago we visited a working 17th Century village and thought we'd fit in quite well! He can do all the woodworking, fishing, hunting and cooking while I grow veg and make clothes and pottery. Reckon we'd survive but we'd need modem medicine to stand much of a chance of making it to 40!

An other successful day for my woodturning demonstration trade in the year of our good Lord 1642 #woodcraft #littlewoodham #woodworking #woodturning #17thcentury #education ##englishrurallife #englishhistory #History

I've just run my first 17th century forge experience day ! It was great fun ! They learnt how to start the forge using flint and steel, turn sea coal to coke and of course make some period ironwork on some several hundred year old anvils in a 17th century forge in the beautiful setting of Little Woodham.
The reason for running the experience days is that last year some youths broke in to Little Woodham and caused extensive damage including burning down one of our buildings. I am now running 17th century forge experience days to help in a small way to replenish some of the funds used to rebuild after the vandalism. The experience days will start properly as of September, there's been quite a bit of interest, hoping that it will take off. #blacksmith #forge #17thcentury #littlewoodham #livinghistory #experience

As well as the old fifth foot anvil and the church window anvil, I have this wonderfully old stake anvil. A lovely anvil to use, demonstrate and talk about to visitors. It has a sloped flared base to help prevent it from turning in the stump when being used. Very similar to the stake anvil in the oil painting of 'Apollo in the Forge of Vulcan' painted by Diego de VelΓ‘zquez in 1629/1630. I sent pics and size details to the British museum and initial estimates put it between the late 16th century and the turn of the 17th century. I love it and very proud to own and use it - I often wonder how many people have heard the ring from these old anvils over the several hundred years they've been around πŸ‘πŸ’₯πŸ”¨ #blacksmith #forge #wroughtiron #littlewoodham #17thcentury #reenactment #livinghistory
