SAVED! March of The Little Children by John Millar Watt (1895-1975).
After hours of careful cleaning, this previously left for dead Millar Watt is now restored to it's former glory. Illustrating the incredible story of Gladys Aylward, a Christian missionary in China who led over 100 Chinese orphans to safety over the mountains during an invasion by Japanese forces in 1938. Aylward's life has been documented in 'The Small Woman' the book by Alan Burgess, as well as in the 1958 film 'The Inn of The Sixth Happiness' starring Ingrid Bergman.
The artist, John Millar Watt was commissioned to paint front covers for The Sphere, The Illustrated London News and Reader's Digest- later in life, he focussed on historical illustrations and illustrating adventure stories such as Robin Hood, Dick Turpin and Robinson Crusoe... unfortunately, a great amount of his work has been destroyed over the years- thankfully this piece is now back amongst the living!
There are several incredible examples of his work available on The Illustration Art Gallery's website: bookpalace.com
