Let’s Give Up our afternoon tea-time tomorrow for SEBASTIAN SIM, and join him for ‘The Riot Act’ launch at Kinokuniya Singapore Main Store (L4, Takashimaya S.C.)! Swipe for details! 🤓✌🏻

Sebastian Sim is an award-winning writer. Never one to shy away from the road less taken, he spent his twenties backpacking around the world to soak up different experiences and cultures. Since returning home, he has published three Chinese wuxia novels between 2004 and 2012. As a former prisons officer, having to follow a strict schedule whilst writing wasn’t easy, and Sebastian remembers having to “wake up early, open a can of Red Bull and start writing”.

‘Let’s Give It Up For Gimme Lao!’ is Sebastian’s first English novel. It was shortlisted for the Singapore Book Awards 2017 (Best Fiction Title) and was a finalist for the 2015 Epigram Books Fiction Prize.

Sebastian’s second English novel ‘The Riot Act’ won him the 2017 Epigram Books Fiction Prize and its award of S$25,000. 🥇💰

The story is “set in the aftermath of the 2013 Little India riot (in Singapore), (and) is a fictional tale about three women whose lives intertwine due to the event.” Hashwini wonders if she triggered the chaos; Jessica asks if she should reveal what truly happened in the ambulance; Sharon thinks that the catastrophe could be what she needs to boost her political career.

“Described as a "fast-paced romp", it follows in the same comic vein as ‘Gimme Lao’ and looks at the way the truth was distorted and reworked to fit different agendas in the wake of the riot.”

For more than three hours on Dec 8, 2013, Race Course Road became the most dangerous road in Singapore as rioters burnt police cars, ambulance and damaged a bus following the death of a migrant worker pinned under a bus. Rocks and bricks were hurled at strangers and cops when they got too close. My colleague Jon and I were the only journos in the middle of the action because we took a less traveled road. The last riot in Singapore was 40 years ago. #littleindiariot #singapore #police #rioters #thenewpaper #danger #asia #rightplacewrongtime #peace #cars #roadclosed #lawenforcement #riotpolice #stickandstones #paramedic #fire #injured #damaged

#ohoreads The Riot Act by Sebastian Sim, a dark comedy which won the third Epigram Books Fiction Prize last year. It is told from the perspectives of three Singaporean women entangled in the 2013 Little India riot and its aftermath. Hashwini, a casino croupier who aspires to be an influencer, feels guilty about her part in sparking the riot – but not so guilty that she will refrain from using it to get pageviews for her blog. Jessica, a student injured during the riot, is found in an abandoned ambulance into which a well-meaning migrant worker had carried her, seeking help. Now the nation thinks the worst happened in that ambulance, her rescuer is in a coma and only she can tell the truth. But she chooses to stay silent, even as a migrant worker advocacy group and Sharon Shi, a Member of Parliament capitalising on the riot to push for an alcohol ban, try to get her on their side. Sim has produced a raucously funny novel, precisely because he is so sharp in unpicking ugliness in society, from xenophobia to fake news to political machinations. Nobody is innocent; everyone has an agenda. Link in bio to full review (premium) #buysinglit #threesacrowd

#throwback to #2015 but taken on 14/12/2017: the using of the #littleindiariot as the backdrop to ramp up #policepatrol in #publicplaces (in #littleindia and #geylang) indefinitely is not justifiable! More so, the #liquorcontrolact does not only “aim to minimize #publicdisorder and #disamenities arising from #drinking in #public”, it renders the #impossibilities of #agency that is needed for any #civic #dialogues between #thestate and it’s #people through an #authoritarian approach! Not surprisingly, @channelnewsasia is more concern about whether establishments are #profiting from this wacky #bill.

In the aftermath of the 2013 Little India riots, the local public's acceptance of migrant workers has dipped, and policies have been implemented to hide the migrant worker away from Singaporean society. Last night, I visited a migrant workers' dormitory and tried to explore what life other side of the fence looked like. - Will be sharing more soon.

Is this the cause of riot at Little India on 8 Dec 2013? 😄

No public drinking from 1030pm - 7am just because of 1 riot? If one wants to get intoxicated and start a riot accidentally, anytime also can. Teo bo?

If a riot is started without liquor consumption, does this mean we should have a curfew from 1030pm - 7am also? 😜
