Why do you write?
.
.
•I was tagged by @beardbetweenthelines and I’d like to hear all of your thoughts about why you write (here in the comments or your own post-tag me if you do so I can see your answer!)
.
.
•I think it goes beyond the pat answer of, “I like to tell stories.” I do, obviously. I believe it goes beyond that though. Words are powerful, spoken and written. There is something so intimate about the written word, the way that no two people are the same, yet can connect over a piece of written word. It can unite us in thought and purpose. Whether it’s a feeling of empowerment, injustice, love or the feeling of being understood. On a larger scale, many revolutions of thought and action started with a few pieces of paper with some (albeit very powerfully written) words scribbled on it. (Think Martin Luther’s Ninety-five Theses.)
.
.
•Bonus question: What is a specific example of literature that started a movement, whether big or small?
.
.

PenManship (2016). This is one of my pieces written about a year and a half ago. It's very important for people of color, women, and poor/working class people to write their own histories into the school curriculum because those who write and publish the textbooks sure as hell don't and won't. #poetry #blackpoetry #blackhistory #history #poetsofinstagram #inkandpaper #literaryrevolution #unapologeticallyblack #blacklivesmatter #blackhistorymatters

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." Author of perhaps the most iconic opening lines to a novel, Charles Dickens, was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. The English novelist, arguably the most popular of the Victorian era, gave us treasure troves such as David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, etc. replete with quirky, fascinating, relatable characters.
Like his characters David Copperfield and Oliver Twist, his was a story of "rags to riches" and braving the odds, and his vivid, descriptive style only added to the charm.
But he wasn't just a brilliant writer, he was also a beacon for the downtrodden. His fictional works as well as his non-fictional ventures such as his paper "The Daily News" championed for justice and equality.
Charles Dickens was an inspiring force and will continue to live in our hearts until the end of time.
What's your favourite Charles Dickens novel?

As a short story writer, I can tell you straight away that there's no one single writer more inspiring and more relevant to the field of short story writing than Canadian writer Alice Munro. Munro won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013, and is one of those very few writers who have stuck primarily to short stories throughout their careers (and been awarded for it). Her stories are timeless human stories that break the natural order of time; they flit forward and backward and weave magic that remains rooted in your hearts. She truly revolutionised the architecture of short stories, in particular, and literature, in general. Some days Alice Munro is the reason I write. 🌸✨ #literaryartsjournal #writersofinstagram #poetsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #indianwriters #indianpoets #indianartists #literature #literarymemes #writersofindia #poetsofindia #artistsofindia #alicemunro #fiction #writing #poetry #reading #what #boybye #shortstories #nobel #award #literaryrevolution #legend #canada #books #stories

We love this thoughtful & eloquent manifest on the importance of books & literature from our friends @juniperbooks #literaryrevolution #printisntdead #booksarelife #booklover ・・・
"The printed book has been read its last rites many times over the past two centuries. The first occasion was back in 1831, when the French poet-politician Alphonse de Lamartine declared that books would be rendered obsolete by the proliferation of daily newspapers. “The book will arrive too late,” he mourned. In 1894, a Scribner’s Magazine writer predicted that the phonograph, recently invented by Thomas Edison, would mean “the end of books.” Readers would be replaced by “hearers.” During the twentieth century, the arrival of every new media technology — telephone, radio, movies, microfilm, TV, personal computer, CD-ROM —spurred a new round of epitaphs for the book."

Some FAQs about submitting-- Q: Can anyone submit? Do I have to be a certain age? Do I have to live in the USA?
A: We accept work from anyone and everyone, anywhere in the world, of any age.
Q: How many pieces can I submit?
A: Technically, we don't have a limit. But as an editor, I'll let you in on a secret. The sweet spot for fiction/any prose is 1-2 pieces, for poetry it is 3 pieces, for music it is 1 song, and for visual art it's literally just as many pieces as you want to submit.
Q: When will I find out if my work has been accepted or not?
A: Sometime after the deadline, September 1!
Q: Do you accept work that's previously been published?
A: Yes! As long as you have the rights to it, send it in!
