#LittleBuddyspotlight Adeline, 3rd grade • “I love reading books about penguins because they’re so cute. I’ve read lots of books about them, but my favorite is the new book I got If You Were a Penguin! My favorite memories from this semester were playing different games with my Big Buddy. We played word games like word searches and did vocabulary sorting games. When I grow up, I want to be an Open Books Buddy because I want to help kids too!” #ReadingBuddies #literacymatters📚 #nonprofit #mentor #volunteerchicago #penguins #whenIgrowup #readingskills #favoritebooks #favoriteanimal #inspire

#BigBuddyspotlight Lissa • “I initially actually went to the Open Books book club, which I loved and I learned more about Open Books through that and what the Reading Buddies program was. Also, I wanted to have a connection with a kid that I could help learn to read and I love reading so I wanted to instill some of that, too. My favorite moment this semester was reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid with my Little Buddy Henry because theirs a chapter where Greg was up late watching a horror movie and he gets all scared about a muddy hand and he thinks about it while in real life. Henry looked over at one point and said, “That’s not real is it?” I read tons of books when I was younger (my mom is a teacher of remedial reading and language arts) so I was always surrounded by tons of books, but I really loved A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle.” #ReadingBuddies #literacymatters📚 #volunteerchicago #mentor #nonprofit #favoritememories #diaryofawimpykid #favoritebook #awrinkleintime

#LittleBuddyspotlight Nathan, 3rd grade • “My favorite book to read is Dog Man because it’s fun and there’s an adventure in each chapter. I’m in the middle of Wonder right now and I like it so far. My favorite types of stories to read are funny fiction books because I’m funny. I like going to Reading Buddies because I get to be out of the classroom for a little and I love that I get to read for longer two times a week.” #ReadingBuddies #literacymatters📚 #nonprofit #volunteerchicago #favoritebook #Dogman #humor #currentlyreading #Wonder #mentor

#BigBuddyspotlight Lynda • “My son is in college now and I’ve always enjoyed helping him when he was little so I thought it would be a good way to give back. Also, we just moved back to the city so I thought it would be a worthwhile cause, and it has been. My favorite memories from this semester has been helping my Little Buddies work on their books. They both were really excited to write something theirselves. I loved reading The Wizard of Oz when I was younger because I liked the whole magical feeling of the entire book. But, one book I believe every child should read is Where the Wild Things Are because it takes kids out of their comfort zones and makes them think about things differently.” #ReadingBuddies #volunteerchicago #nonprofit #literacymatters📚 #mentor #wherethewildthingsare #favoritebook #wizardofoz

#LittleBuddyspotlight Joseph, 3rd grade • “I have a lot of fun at Open Books because my Big Buddy is always here. The most important thing I’ve learned this semester is how to read longer by working with my Buddy. My favorite memories are reading together with my Big Buddy Dave because he is funny, joyful, and nice! My favorite book I’ve read was about the Barcelona soccer star Andrés Iniesta, because they’re my favorite soccer team.” #ReadingBuddies #literacymatters📚 #favoritebook #soccerbooks #andresiniesta #mentor #volunteerchicago

#BigBuddyspotlight Salman • “After I graduated, I remember getting an email about a volunteer opportunity at Open Books so I decided to visit the store downtown and go to an orientation. I really liked and was impressed by everything that you guys were doing. Also, I volunteered with children in the public education sector back home so I thought Reading Buddies would be a nice thing to do while I’m still here. My favorite moments with my Buddies are the little things that I notice as we go along rather than just one moment. You’re able to learn so much about the way a children’s minds work. One of my Buddies is really shy but as soon as he discovered a book he was really into he completely transformed, and that was a very exciting moment. Also, the way they’re always sort of reading you and they are very perspective so it’s almost challenging to be able to engage a child. They truly look up to you, so it’s very rewarding.” #ReadingBuddies #volunteerchicago #literacymatters📚 #mentor #reading #publiceducation

#LittleBuddyspotlight Michael, 3rd grade • “I like reading because it really helps me learn new stuff and it makes me smarter. My favorite types of books to read are scary stories and mysteries. I like them because they teach me life-long lessons, like not to go near strangers. I like reading with my Big Buddy because he has the same name as me and because we do fun activities after we finish a book, like playing hangman!” #ReadingBuddies #literacymatters📚 #buildingconfidence #mysterybooks #scarystories #volunteerchicago #mentor

#BigBuddyspotlight Carol • “I was a volunteer with the Read Then Write program for a few years and I wanted to try a different Open Books program. I thought Reading Buddies would be a fun experience since I’m working with a younger age than the 7th and 8th graders from the Read Then Write program. My favorite moments working with my Little Buddies has come from the writing that we’ve been doing for our end of the semester project. Their imaginations and their stories are so creative. It’s been very cool seeing them put their thoughts to paper. I don’t know where they get their ideas from (one of my Buddies is writing about a haunted mansion and the other is writing a Dogman sequel) but it’s been fun!” #ReadingBuddies #volunteerchicago #creativewriting #youngauthors #literacymatters📚 #mentor #buildingconfidence

#LittleBuddyspotlight Ava, 3rd grade • “I love reading about space. I knew just a little bit about it but then I read Margaret and the Moon and now I can’t stop reading all about it! My Big Buddy gives me vocabulary words based on the books we’re reading each day so I like that I’m learning a lot each time I see her. I really want to be either an astronaut or gymnast when I grow up. I could be both and do flips while I’m in space since there’s no gravity! Oh, and I also want to be a scientist and invent things!” #ReadingBuddies #literacymatters📚 #favoritebook #space #childrensbooks #dreams #volunteerchicago

One of my favorite places to spend my time...🤓💙 #nerd #library #literacymatters📚

#BigBuddyspotlight Tracey • “I’m here for a year and back in the UK I work in a secondary school so I wanted to see what the education system was like here. I also thought Reading Buddies would be a good way to give back while I’m here. My favorite moment this term happened when I was working with my Little Buddy Jasmine. At the end of the session she said, “that was really fun!” It really made me smile because she had been having some difficulty before and it was good seeing her so excited. My favorite book to read as a child was The Twits by Roald Dahl because it was shocking and hilarious and little bit edgy. I couldn’t wait to read it to my children, but when they were old enough to appreciate it of course.” #ReadingBuddies #literacymatters📚 #education #mentor #volunteerchicago #roalddahl #favoritebook Help support this important work in the community!
