👪 Advice 4 Parents 👨👩👧
Today is a massive day for our children, in particular those who are leaving to start "big school" in September. Not only are they leaving their friends and the safety of their school community behind, they are about to commence the biggest transition of their young lives. Be prepared for a cocktail emotions as they come running out of school as today they will experience loss in it's true form.
Here are some tips to help your child cope:
❤️ No doubt your child will be crying their hearts out as soon as they reach the front door. Hold them tight and let them express their emotions. Offer lots of hugs and kisses.
❤️ Ask about the exciting things they have done today on their last day at school.
❤️Arrange for them to get together with their friends over the holiday period. Mark these dates on a calendar and place this where your child can see it.
❤️ Aim to transform any anxious feelings into excitement. Talk about all the positive factors associated with their new school NOW.
❤️ Always be available for your child so they can talk to you about their "loss" and "sadness". Whether this be about their old teachers, old friends, or old school in general. Let them know that it is normal to feel this way, and talk about how you felt when you left primary school. Remember feeling sad about leaving their school is actually a good thing, because it means they had a good experience that they are sad to be leaving behind.
❤️ Engage your child in exciting activities that will boost their confidence and build their resilience so they are ready for their new journey ahead.
