Patient safety is our first priority in healthcare. Recently, multiple misleading articles are published on social media regarding the suggested unsafety of liposuction procedures.
The statements in these comments are misleading, false and extremely harmful for the plastic surgery professionals who want to provide the best healthcare for their patients.
The major complication rate in liposuction surgery is less than 1%.As in every medical profession, patient selection and surgical technique is crucial and related to the risk of complications. An experienced surgeon who operates patients with a low risk factor (acceptable BMI , no diabetes, no smoking etc) will have a major complication rate lower than 1% in liposuction surgeries. Patient studies report a 80% satisfaction rate and 86% of the patients would recommend liposuction to their family.
Liposuction has major (non-cosmetic) advantages: Lymphedema reduction in upper- and lower extremity, breast reconstruction with fat transfer for breast cancer patients, correction of contour and painful deformities, nerve and tendon conditions treated by fat transfer, intraarticular fat injections for osteoarthritis, adipose derived stem cells received by liposuction for osteoarthritis , hair loss and scar treatment. Fasting plasma insulin and insulin sensitivity seem to be positively influenced together with cardiovascular and metabolic variables in some studies after liposuction among ( obese ) patients. Non-experienced doctors without intensive surgical training or with poor patient selection are responsible for the majority of patient complications mentioned in these articles.
The plastic surgeons in King's College Hospital London-UAE have experience with hundreds of patients and combined with the literature references in the letter attached confirm the high patient satisfaction and safety.
