Most are surprised to hear that SPEED IS A SKILL!  While some people are just simply fast…that doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t get faster.  It’s like learning the skill of hitting a tennis ball, a golf ball, a baseball, shooting a basketball…
🔸IT CAN BE LEARNED AND YOU CAN IMPROVE!🔸

Where does the skill of speed breakdown?  There are a few very common area.  Shown in the video are 2 of the most common I see:
1️⃣ Incorrect (negative) shin angles in the starting position
2️⃣ Incorrect (negative) shin angles in the first step leg

Who cares?  How does this apply?

📙Newton’s 3rd Law: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. -
Yep, physics is coming back to haunt us.
-
💡Simple application here: if we want to run forward, we have to push backward against the ground.
-
While simple in concept, many of us learned how to run (self taught) without applying this well.  In the video, you will see the 2 most common positions when athletes often push the wrong direction.  You’ll notice the shin angle vertical or negative.  Carrying Newton’s 3rd Law thinking out…if you push forward (negative shin angle) then your body will move backward. Said another way, a negative shin angle is a “BRAKING” or decelerating force.  That’s not good for speed.

Notice the vertical shin angle in the first step: if we push down where will we move ⬆️UP!  That is also not helpful in running speed as the desired direction is to move ➡️FORWARD.

Simple getting in some movement training can change these mechanics and allow the athlete to USE the speed he/she ALREADY HAS.
👉🏻then imagine what happens if we layer that with strength and power development… (we’ll save that for another post)

Elite soccer athlete, @simrattanpal improving starting ability and acceleration lean.

Half kneeling start variation requires the athlete to overcome their body mass by driving off the front leg only. This will develop tremendous starting strength in both limbs, which will help the athlete become comfortable from either side during competition.

Falling starts can be utilized as the initial exercise of the sprint progression due to the high start angle, which will limit forces during acceleration. Coach your athletes to keep their hips “in” as opposed to just bending at the waist as they fall forward.

Push-up starts: teaches athletes to fire out low / helps reinforce positive shin angle when driving out of the push-up position
