I already did a rambling post on Morning View and a showoff post for SCIENCE, so now here's the third of three Incubus albums that we own on vinyl. I always considered Light Grenades one of my least favorite Incubus albums, but I listened to it tonight for the first time in a while and loved it. I got into them between Crow and LG so this was the first album released I experienced as a fan, but I had already become a jaded 'they don't sound like the Fungus days' fan by then so my initial listens bummed me out.
That being said - Quicksand, Oil and Water, Paper Shoes, and Pendulous Threads are all among my top favorite Incubus songs. People probably hate Dig but I love it - it makes me nostalgic for that 2006-07 era and it's one of my favorite Brandon Boyd stratosphere vocals. My horrible teenage self thought Earth to Bella was 'Incubus going 'emo'' and I avoided it for a long time, but I eventually saw both parts played live and it finally clicked. The lyrics to Love Hurts are dopey but I like the music. Quicksand is a perfect song. And the buildup to the key change at the end of Pendulous Threads is one of my favorite moments in music, ever.
Other thoughts: Punch Drunk is another of my all-time favorites and should have been on the album. In 2007, The Kursk decided that to get new fans we would cover the #1 charting rock song at the time, which was Anna Molly. We practiced it but never played it out. Also, I sent Mike Einziger a myspace message around the time LG came out, said I liked the album, and asked if they would play Psychopsilocybin or Sink Beneath the Line live. I got no response. #incubus #lightgrenades
