☾ High School ☾
I have been picked and spit on. Pushed around the hallways. My bag full of books emptied on the dirty hallway floors. One day a so called girlfriend of mine threw a wad of paper at me. When I asked her my
voice broke: ‘Why are you doing that?’, she answered: ‘Because you are the garbage bin.’ I have been called names, some of them so bad I
don’t want to repeat them ever again… Why?
Because I was different.
Since I was a little kid other kids called me a witch, a whore. Yes, it has hurt a lot. Yes, there are old scars of not feeling good enough… of not feeling worthy… But it has made me the woman that I am
today. It shaped my character. I refuse to be a victim, I try to look at what it brought me. The strength that it has given me. The advice
that I can give other people about being different. That it is something to be f*cking proud of…
It made me realise that we are all unique beings, worthy of infinite love. I work with young adults in High School and when I make art or theatre with them, the stories about being bullied come up. I believe art - and thus me - are a safe haven for them. The ones that indulge in creativity are always the outsiders. The outcast. And my role? I comfort them. Tell them they are unique beings, that they are worthy of love. That maybe they don’t feel accepted by others, but they can accept themselves. It all starts with self love.
I also tell them that life will change. That it will become different. Once you choose a direction in life, once you get into college… things change. You will find your tribe. There truly is a tribe for
everybody. I always tell them: ‘Hang in there! Life will become so different. Once you leave high school, the stories about that you can
choose your own food, when you will go to bed, if you make your bed, if you clean your dishes, how you spend your money - on shoes, on booze, on conscious retreats (the one I would advice now ;) - they are all true. There is freedom! Don’t give up. Hang in there.’
And know that there are always people out there, just like you. Like me! Be yourself. Everybody else is already taken. And if we would be all the same… That would be truly boring! ♥️
