We had an active discussion in the lead up to International Women's Day, about discounts and freebies and the usual marketing bullcrap ... but it was a listless, half-as$ed chat that nobody really wanted to have, least of all me. Then it hit me - I work among women (from our founding team, to colleagues, to designers, to my branding soundboards, friends who rehydrate me with G&Ts) - women who have a deep sense and understanding that this Day is more than what marketeers sell.
Today when I wish others Happy International Women's Day, I realise that I'm doing this from a position of privilege - I was blessed to be able to grow up in a well-loved, safe, protected environment; I wasn't mutilated or married off as a child; I was privileged to go to school and university; then I worked in a corporate field that remunerated me for my skillset; I left because I had the privilege to own my own business - the privilege to follow my passion. I don't drive a car out of my own volition, not because I was told I'm not allowed to. I have the responsibility and privilege to vote. The privilege to continuously educate myself and freely share this knowledge. To own property, and travel, and love freely, and marry a man from a background completely different from mine.
So today is about remembering all the women who do not have the privileges we seemingly take for granted. It's about women who have never even heard of this thing called 'International Women's Day'. Women who have their worlds falling around them, and rights either being stripped away, or denied entirely, but who wake up every day, feed their children, teach them, and sing to them. Women who work in terrible environments for unfair, discriminatory wages, and persevere because that is what women do - they persevere. Then in quiet moments they whisper with deep strength to their children, "you will be more than this". Women who envision a better reality and so must we.
