Had a tour of the #libertyship John W Brown. What a blast. #gobaltimore

The Liberty Ship concept was very widely used by the US during WWII, and afterwords there were many ships left over. One in particular was the Benjamin R. Curtis, built in 1942. She weighed 7,100 tons, was 440 ft long and could make only 11 knots. After the service of the Curtis for the US, even a year after the war, but as well for the French. In 1946, she was sold to the French government and renamed Grandcamp. Her service wasn’t to be long as it came to an abrupt end in port. While docked in Texas City with ammonium nitrate (some 2,300 tons of it, which is explosive under certain conditions) on April 16th, 1947, her crew noticed smoke coming from her holds. Quickly the fire department was called and firefighters fought the inferno. As it was, the cargo was indeed under such conditions as mentioned above and the whole lot combusted. The blast completely obliterated all surrounding objects, including the nearby chemical building in which 200 people were killed instantly! Many of the firefighters and dock workers also were killed. A 500 ton barge that happened to be near was picked up and thrown about 215 ft on shore. Shock waves reverberated throughout Texas City; any building within a mile was destroyed and cars were blown off the freeway 2 miles away, killing some occupants. Fires erupted on another ship with a smaller amount of the same cargo and it too exploded that night, but thankfully the area was mostly evacuated. It took 3 days before everything was under control. In all this catastrophe took the lives of at least 570 people, some sources say 600. The sheer force of the explosion is enough to engrave the memories of those who survived. #merchantnavy #merchantmarine #ship #history #maritime #photo #libertyship #explosion #disaster #tragedy #texascity #texascitydisaster #1942 #1947 #2018 #firefighter #smoke #port #wwii #ww2 #french #benjaminrcurtis #ammoniumnitrate #lestweforget #grandcamp

Top of the line Chelsea Time and Tide clock. It's chrome over brass and displays time, high tide, low tide, and mid tides. The piece is very heavy and truly shows the Chelsea craftsmanship. The clock has a 5 1/2" face and is mounted on a custom built mahogany base with brass feet. A salty piece, indeed!
