My review of: Silence.
This film is hard to stomach. While being a brilliant and gorgeous film, it's theme, tone, and overall message is hard to go through. The tribulations that you see are very brutal, the psychological torture, the testing of faith (more on that later) it's just overall a very deep and depressing movie to see. That being said, I loved it. It's one of my all time favorite films, Scorsese is a master at directing, and this could be his crown jewel. Following two missionaries in the early 1600's trying to find a Padre who supposedly renounced the faith of Christianity in public in the middle of Japan during the height of the religious "war", this is a suspenseful and gripping film that asks the question, what is faith? It doesn't focus on Christianity as a whole, and it doesn't come off as "preachy" like most films that involves some type of religion. It's more on the actual ACT of faith. Why do we have faith? Why do we strive to keep faith? Is faith in something worth being tortured and killed over? This film is very thought provoking and I think that's what Scorsese had in mind when he wrote this film. Also honorable mention to Liam Neeson, who is actually in a legitimate acting role rather than throat punching people. Plus he is VERY good as the fallen Padre. Adam Driver was amazing, and his character was surprisingly the most faithful of them all. You'd think Garfield's character would be considering he's the main character but no, Driver's character (which I will not try to spell the name of) is the most devoted of the pair. Also the use of silence throughout the film just brought so much tension. Wise choice.
My Verdict: this is a slow and somber tale on persecution of people with a difference of faith. The characters feel like real people, so you become extremely attached to them as they go through their trials. It won't be for everyone, but for me, Silence earns an A+. #silence #movies #movie #theatre #martinscorsese #andrewgarfield #adamdriver #liamneeson #trending #cinematography #photography #faith #christ #christianity #japan #mission #buddha #like #comment #follow #amc #mtv #followtrain #trending #art #masterpiece
