“And with difficulty, effort, and stress, like the opening of a door grown rusty on its hinges, a smile appeared on the face with the attentive eyes, and from that opening door came a breath of fragrance which suffused Pierre with a happiness he had long forgotten and of which he had not even been thinking— especially at that moment.” - Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace.

It was a coincident that I read ‘The Death of Ivan ilych’ and ‘Socrates’ defence’ one after another. As I was reading the latter,I keep on thinking about Ivan. He never examined his life which for Socrates is ” - a life not worth living”. Ivan went on living a decent life, decency that of shaped by social conditions, not by one's own conscious mind. Socrate on the other hand is,in true sense, a philosopher, possessing both intellectual and experiential knowledge. Before the rise in popularity and commercialising of the saying ‘Be yourself or Be authentic’, Socrate was living by it.
Both of these spiritual books helps you define life and death, or at least, raises the question in your mind about death and life. I wonder what would be different  have i read these books in different order?

While I was reading “Anna Karenina” by Tolstoy this morning, I found this...
.
“Darya Alexandrovna had done her hair, and dressed with care and excitement. In the old days she had dressed for her own sake to look pretty and be admired. Later on, as she got older, dress became more and more distasteful to her. She saw that she was losing her good looks. But now she began to feel pleasure and interest in dress again. Now she did not dress for her own sake, not for the sake of her own beauty, but simply that as the mother of those exquisite creatures she might not spoil the general effect.”
.
And this...
.
“In spite of Stepan Arkadyevitch's efforts to be an attentive father and husband, he never could keep in his mind that he had a wife and children. He had bachelor tastes, and it was in accordance with them that he shaped his life.”
.
Sometimes it’s better to read some world classics instead of help yourselves books. Don’t you think?

How am I giving four stars to a book which is essentially a man giving justifications for why he murdered his wife? Why does this book fit in a Great Loves collection? It’s safe to say that I’m having a lot of feelings about this little book. Have any of you read it? What did you think?

"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." --Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

Someone is getting extra special treatment today as she recovers from having a tooth pulled yesterday. She's a bit more clingy & snuggly than usual, not that I'm complaining 💕🐶💕

I finished Part I of ANNA KARENINA & I am hooked! It was slow-going at first, trying to get down at the names, especially as some of the characters go by one name when they are with certain people & another name with other people...talk about confusing! But I think I have it all straight now.

I liked the introduction of all the relationships & am quite curious as to how far each of them will go...

I'm not sure if I have a favorite character just yet, but I do know that Anna's husband is definitely not it!

Now on to Part 2!!!

"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." First sentence in Anna Karenina (1878). Preparing a letter and came across a postcard of the great Leo Tolstoy, novelist, philosopher and count.

Finished this one a few weeks ago. It was a long, long, trek. I started in April and spent many days, weeks and months listening on the way to and from work. But I took several long breaks. Maggie Gyllenhaal was a fantastic narrator. I read some of it with my eyes as well.
I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in the world that didn't know how things were going to turn out for Anna. So I was pretty upset that when I checked a character list to make sure I understood who someone was, that I got the BIGGEST SPOILER EVER!! The EXACT same thing happened to me with Moby Dick!! I know, I know, is there really a possibility of spoiling a story that's over a hundred years old?? Well, with me, apparently so. So I was sooo disappointed but I pulled myself together and kept on reading, watching everything slowly and methodically come to pass.
It was painful. Not painful reading, but painful frustration witnessing so many poor choices. And witnessing all the suffering those choices brought on. That was some for-real, straight-up, reality. But then there was also a glorious, compelling scene of manual grass cutting. And I'm serious when I say that part was so good!
Overall, this book thrilled me because of all the hope it presents at the end. So beautifully done! And I've decided that if I ever get another male cat, I'm totally naming him Levin. That is all.♡

My current reads:
1. Anna Karenina, for #annakin8 with Whitney (@theunreadshelf)
2. The History of Love, the November Modern Mrs. Darcy book club pick, and
3. Born a Crime, which is a retread just because I love Trevor Noah and love celebrity memoirs!

What are you reading these days? Are you juggling multiple books?
