I think it is sad that the Spotted Hyena almost always is the villain in nature documentaries.
They might not have the good looks of the cats, but the fact is still there. This is a top predator and not a cowardly scavenger that many think. They have the same problem as many African predators and that is that Lions try to steal their food.
I find them fascinating in many ways and really love their whooping call. This photo is taken of a young Spotted Hyena in Botswana. I am flat on the ground with the Hyena a few meters in front of me and his mum a couple of more meters behind. I felt completely safe together with them just like I did in Mana Pools last year while on foot with Hyenas. © Lensman – Lennart Hessel Photography
