We handed over our brevet cards at the end of #lel2017 on August 4th and from there they were validated by #audax UK, and Les Rondonneurs Mondiaux before being mailed back to us. The mailing process began over 20 days ago and almost a week after @stevegraphery received his, I finally got my LEL brevet card back in the mail! Holding the card and seeing all the stamps from each control brought a flood of emotions from memories from the event. The other day someone, whom has never done a brevet before, made the comment that we rode the event for just a piece of paper. In a way they are right, but only because of what this piece of paper represents! This piece of paper represents the physical and mental toughness that was put to the test as we faced unknown difficulties; unpredictable weather; dark, cold, and sleepless nights; periods of extreme pain, tired legs, and sore bottoms; and considerable fatigue over five days of riding 900 miles all for no prize money or podium spots. It represents the friendships made from around the Midwest and around the World. It represents hundreds of hours of training at the gym and on the road, and thousands of kilometers in brevets or weekly evening rides in all weather conditions (thunderstorms, rain, sleet, and strong winds), through multiple types of landscapes, and through all hours of the day and night. It represents the determination and persistence it takes to train to ride multiple 150 plus mile days in row. This piece of paper represent our unwavering determination not only in our journey training for LEL but to complete LEL and the profound sense of pride that will last a lifetime knowing that we completed one of the most challenging cycling events in the world. This piece of paper represents a sense of achievement knowing that we pushed back the boundaries of our impossible and redefined the possible!
