Day 19/100 of the #100dayproject

While on a trip to Newport Beach in 2013, James and I were riding our bikes when we just happened to ride by a church that looked familiar to James. We pulled over, and he realized it was the same church he had visited when he was a young boy.

James’ Uncle Wally was the artist who did the mosaic work on the outside of the church. We had fun looking at Wally’s artwork, just like James did when he was a boy. You can even see Wally’s signature still there!

I took my all time favorite journal layout that I made back in 2012 of Lehi's Dream and I scanned it, cleaned it up, and made it into a quick page template that you can now have! (Store link in bio) Just print it out and put it in your journals, and fill it in as you study! I hope you love this in your journals as much as I love it in mine! I would love to see how you use it! Thoughts on the river of filthy water in Lehi’s dream: the first picture is an artist’s rendition of the river, but I imagined it to look more like the 2nd picture; just plain putrid. I also imagine it to be more of a rushing river that you could really get swept away in if you’re not careful. I was talking to my husband about the river and his take on it was that it’s something people might get swept up in while trying to get to the great and spacious building; they’re seeking after fame, fortune, power, etc, but end up drowning in addictions, unhealthy relationships, unhealthy lifestyles, etc. I thought this was an accurate description and interesting perspective from a real special guy. 😏@jaredcparker .................... .....................The thing that really stood out to me as I read it this time is that the river of water filthy water runs alongside the path to the tree of life, rather than leading away from it. I love this! This means that of at any point someone decides to leave the filthy water and get back on the path, it will be right there for them. They just need to grab onto the rod, which runs along the banks of the river and pull themselves out! This won’t be an easy task; extricating yourself from rushing water never is, but if you’re willing to swim with all your might, if you’re willing to grab on to the rod and hold on for dear life it’s possible! Plus, there will be others already on the path to pull you in, dry you off and set you in the right direction. What a perfect description of how the gospel works. Lehi sure was a visionary man. His dream gets better every time I read it. #lehiyouolddreamer #lehisdream #filthywater #lds #mormon #scripturestudy #bookofmormon

As I began to read the Book of Mormon for the first time, I was freshly sober and barely out of some very, very dark and dangerous places. When I came across Lehi's vision of the tree and it began talking about those who that fall away into mists of darkness I could totally relate to that visual. 🌳☁🍃It's exactly what it feels like to let go of the iron rod! For me, it was like free falling into a mist of confusion and I could no longer remember who I was or feel my way home to God. I could sense tiny pieces of truth but without the Savior as my focal point, principles had no perspective and were fleeting and shifting. The mists became a veil of spiritual amnesia and I no longer could recall the truths I once knew as a child. Reading that story I can remember a sense of relief wash over me as I recognized TRUTH in its purest form. I knew it to my very core. If I hang onto that rod with all the energy of my soul, I will never have to experience being lost in the swirling emptiness that exists in those mists of darkness again. I've done the research😉😧 I've explored every inch of that nothingness- there's nothing out there but pain and confusion in a lack of purpose and meaning. #eatinthatfruitwithoutshame #gratefultobehome #hangingonfordearlife

Not much insight tonight just a question or two. I’m so curious about the man in Lehi’s dream. Who is he? And how long is he leading Lehi during the dream? He’s only mentioned here at the beginning and it says he talks to Lehi but then shortly after Lehi is praying asking questions of the Lord. I wonder if the man was still there, was he conversing with Lehi? Even if he was still around I like the pattern of Lehi praying for answers versus asking man. That’s a cool thought.

Exhibit A (^see above picture) is that of a young man or woman swerving (aka curbing) evil. And staying on the path that is verily straight and narrow. #swervetotherod #theironrod

#thebom30daychallenge ... Lehi’s Dream ... THE TREE OF LIFE ... Vs 9-18 ... “The greatest manifestation of God’s love for His children is the mortal ministry, atoning sacrifice, and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The fruit on the tree can be considered a symbol for the blessings of the Savior’s Atonement” David A Bednar • 1. What does the tree represent? Vs. 11 • 2. When Lehi describes the fruit try & relate it to how you feel about the Atonement and the love Heavenly Father and the Savior have for you. Vs 12 • 3. Have you had experiences that have caused you to want others to partake of the Saviors Atonement? Your children, a spouse, family member or friend? Vs 13-16 • 4. What did the river that ran past the tree represent? What can it be compared to in our lives? • 5. In what way does Lehi’s beckoning his family to come & partake of the fruit apply to parents & parenting today? Vs 17-18 • 6. How did Lehi and Sariah do it? How did they endure the pain & disappointment of Laman & Lemuel’s rejection of Jesus Christ & His Atonement? ••• My thoughts & some good quotes will be in the comments below👇❤️ #lehisdream #treeoflife #faith #lds PC: James C Christensen

We've all been there.

🌿“I'm always touched by the truths explained in the Book of Mormon, particularly Lehi's Dream that describes what we can expect in this life if we choose to hold to the rod or choose the forbidden paths.  I used to think that the people in the Great & Spacious Building represented people outside our faith that would persecute and ridicule those who were trying to love God and put Him first in their lives.  This is certainly true and has been in all dispensations of time.  I have also come to know that there are some in the church who spend time in that building as well, hovering high up in the air with all its symbolism.  Regretfully, I've probably spent some time there myself.  What a great and marvelous thing that a "soul so rebellious and proud as mine" can make corrections in my life and get back on the straight and narrow path and hold to the iron rod so I can clumsily make my way, step by step, to that glorious Tree of Life that represents the love of God.  I have partaken of that fruit and I know it is sweet and desirable above all other.  It has changed my life forever and I desire that all would receive it but know that everyone--my spouse, my children, my grandchildren, my friends and neighbors, everyone--must choose for themselves, despite the finger pointing or name calling from those in the great and spacious building.  All I can do is continue applying the Savior 's Atonement in my life, stay on the path, love everyone no matter what, and put God first in my life.  If I can do that, putting my faith and trust in my Savior, everything will be well throughout all eternity.” -Mark 🌿

Sometimes you paint something but it's just not you, the colors, the brushstrokes, and you wonder why am I doing this?! That's when you get a redo. #painting #color #bright #ironrod #lehisdream #tree #artist #betruetoyourself #enjoy #lovewhatyoudo

If you find it difficult to hold fast to the iron rod and walk steadfastly toward salvation; if the laughter and ridicule of others who seem so confident cause you to waver; if you are troubled by unanswered questions or doctrines you don't understand yet; if you feel saddened because of disappointments, I urge you to remember Lehi's dream.

Stay on the path!

Never let go of the rod of iron—the word of God!

And when anyone tries to make you ashamed for partaking of the love of God, ignore them.

Never forget you are a child of God; rich blessings are in store; if you can learn to do His will, you’ll live with Him once more!
The promises of praise and acceptance by the world are unreliable, untrue, and unsatisfying. God's promises are sure, true, and joyful—now and forever.

"Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Ralph Waldo Emerson

In my church, we subscribe to a metaphor called The Iron Rod, which represents the word of God. I have always imagined this rod of iron to be like a stair railing to which all righteous souls cling for dear life as we inch our way toward the sweet fruits hanging on the Tree of Life, all on the same path, all gripping the same smooth but rusted metal bar, all turning our backs to the mockery and shaming of a world that hates us just because we are Christians.
That.... is really unhelpful imagery.... Today, I have redesigned #lehisdream in my mind so that the #ironrod is flush with my spine. I carry it with me. It is the divine reinforcement that compels me to always #standtall to keep my #chinup in #optimism and #gratitude, to speak up in #truth, to #nevershrink or wither in shame. It is my reminder of Who I Am, and from Whom I Descend. It keeps me #straight.
I am dwelling in a body on this glorious earth, which means I am enrolled in God's badass Goddess-To-Be training program. My dad is the King of Heaven. Why would I cling to a bar in fear, shoulders slumped in anticipation of attack, when Father has called me -- and You -- to stand up and shine, to walk tall, dispelling darkness with truth and pure divine light?
