Spanish Conquest of the Philippines, 1565
The beginning of the Spanish Empires relationship with the Philippines started in 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan was circumnavigating the globe. It was the place where he would get killed by hostile natives. Years later, 4 more expeditions would take place in 1525, 1526, 1527 and 1542, all of which ended in failure. Their goal was to go to the spice islands. It wasn't until 1564 when another expedition was launched headed by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.
Legazpi sailed from Barra de Navidad in New Spain (Mexico)with 500 men in order to reach the spice islands on November 20th, 1564. During their 93 day journey they landed in the Marianna's islands to resupply and they fought some natives. They finally reached the Philippine island of Cebu (same place where Magellan died) on February 13th, 1565, but couldn't land due to heavy opposition from the natives. On February 22nd, 1565 the expedition then went to the island of Samar where they made a blood compact with the locals. The expedition returned to Cebu on April 27th, 1565. The Spaniards landed there and easily conquered the Rajahnate of Cebu. As you can tell by the name it was an Indian run kingdom.
This was the beginning of the Spanish Conquest of the Philippine islands and the eventual "hispanization" of the islands after defeating a myriad of enemies that included enemy natives, Muslim sultanates, Hindu Rajahs and East Asian pirates.
Credit to Mark of Falworth for the Silver helmet idea. Its an easy process. All you need is silver spray paint.
