As @gethinthomas83 pointed out earlier Max Schmeling had an uncanny (at times almost comedic) resemblance to former heavyweight legend Jack Dempsey - this is a photo of them together just to prove they were different people haha 🕵🏻. #maxschmeling #theblackuhlan #jackdempsey #themanassamauler #heavyweightchamps #alltimegreats #boxinggreats #boxinglegends #boxingmasters #boxingroyalty #kingsofthering #knockoutkings #greatfighters #greatboxers #legendaryboxers #legendaryfighters #boxinghistory #boxing #boxers #legends

"Rocky didn't know too much about the boxing book...but it wasn't a book he hit me with. It was a whole library...of bonecrushers." Love this picture...the Legendary Jack Johnson in probably around 1920 when he wouldve been around 44 and still not retired from boxing (did Johnson reallyever retire from anything?), sparring on the boards with another remarkable fighter of the era, George Godfrey (so many interesting talents from the era!!?) Godfrey who had 3 'exhibitions' with Johnson in 1922 actually started out on the sparring circuit and was chief sparring partner for Jack Dempsey in the mid-20's before becoming an established name in the division himself (when he retired after losing to Gene Tunney in '27 Dempsey publicly stated he personally considered Godfrey to be the best fighter in the world). 6'4" and anything up 240lbs he was in good enough company to have beaten the likes of Bill Tate, Fred Fulton, Tiger Jack Fox, Jack Roper, and the great Larry Gains. He even was good enough to get a draw with the Legendary Sam Langford in only his second pro fight!! This tells you how much potential he had - although the remarkable Langford did register to KOS against him later on. In the latter side of his career Godfrey did drop a decision to Jack Sharkey and also was DQ'D against primo Carnera after otherwise dominating him. Godfrey was also the only man to KO freakishly sized Romanian Gogea Mitu who stood an insane 7'7" according to estimates! 😨 #georgegodfrey #heavyweightcontender #heavyweightboxer #jackjohnson #thegalvestongiant #lilarthur #papajack #heavyweightchampion #alltimegreats #boxinggreats #boxinglegends #boxingmasters #kingsofthering #prizefighters #greatfighters #legemdaryfighters #legendaryboxers #greatboxers #boxing #boxinghistory #boxers #legends

The man often cited as the benchmark for all British Boxers that came after him, The Great Ted Kid Lewis with another guy named Dempsey who could fight a bit too 😁.
Ted acheived some crazy numbers in his career! Not least, an insane 20 fight series (!!!???) with one of the true Boxing pioneers Jack Britton, totalling 227 rounds completed against him 😨. Kid Lewis turned pro as a 15 year old Flyweight kid and 3 years later he was winning the British Featherweight Title with a 17th round (!!?? at 18) KO of Alec Lambert, and within a year was European Featherweight Champ, and before he was 21 he fighting (and winning) in Madison Square Garden. Maturing through Lightweight and peaking at Welterweight, Lewis was 2-time Welterweight Champion Of The World, once challenging for the Middleweight Title, and once for the LightHeavyweight Title Vs Georges Carpentier. His managers always clamoured for a match with Jack Dillon at Light Heavy which never came off, and Ted himself always dreamed of fighting the man in this picture with him even too!😨

Bugner in his spirited 12 round points loss to Joe Frazier, probably Bugner's best fight, who was often the target of unfair criticism, proved in fights like this, that, he could mix with the big boys. #smokinjoefrazier #smokinjoe #joefrazier #heavyweightchamp #aussiejoebugner #joebugner #heavyweightchallenger #britishboxinglegends #britishboxinghistory #britishheavyweights #legendaryboxers #legendaryfighters #boxinghistory #boxing #boxers #legends

One eye closed, a mile behind on points with the title slipping away and only the last round left to save the title Sugar Ray Leonard goes for broke and launches an unbeleiveable blitzing attack forcing the referee to save a tottering Hearns with seconds to go in the 14th round of The Ring Magazines Fight Of The Year for 1981. Within a year Leonard would announce the first of many 'retirements' after surgery for a detatched retina. #sugarrayleonard #sugarray #themiracleman #thomashitmanhearns #tommyhitmanhearns #tommyhearns #multiweightchampions #p4p #pound4pound #foty1981 #boxingmasters #boxinggenius #kingsofthering #legendaryboxers #legendaryfighters #greatfight #epicfight #boxinghistory #boxing #legends

The only angle Tommy Burns ever looked taller than anyone, let alone The Galveston Giant. Jack Johnson fighhting the first ever fight of his career in front of moving picture cameras, and he was going to milk this moment for everything it was worth. It was also not lost on him that no other African-American had ever got a sniff of a shot at the 'Richest Prize In Sports' not that it mattered a jot to him to be a 'standard bearer for his race', Jack Johnson was an individualist, but if his ascension, to as lofty a status as actually being about to boil down to 'mano e mano', made his White American detractors blood boil then he was going love every second of rubbing their noses in it, and he was going to gloat and he was going to smile and he was going to show the cameras exactly how easy this was for him, and he was going to make it last. Hell, those 'moving picture boys' wanted their decent length film of the fight, so he'd give them what they wanted, the potentially lucrative sale of the fight film rights hinged on it so who was he to dissappoint? This was also the first, and still the only ever, World Heavyweight Title fight staged in Australia, for no other reason that Burns had given Johnson the widest birth possible outside of leaving the planet, under the guise that being a 'world' champion should mean literally that rather than never leaving his own shores - aswell as the age old idea that holding out for optimul gate (PPV equivalent of the day)/building the fight etc would result in richer rewards for both men. Was it just a coincidence that the first time ever that a world champon had deemed it necersary to go away on a world tour was when it just happened to be the most diminutive Heavyweight Champion in history and right at a time when, he was being chased by, probably to then, the most intimidating and uneasy prospect (and fighter) any champion had had in his path to this point?? Burns, if nothing else, was a good business man and he cashed in but you sensed he knew the game was up. The cat & mouse was finished with and now the big black cat was going to make the little white mouse his plaything. #jackjohnson #thegalvestongiant

Lou Ambers was the man to finally break the seemingly irresistable momentum of Henry Armstrong when he defeated Armstrong by unanimous 15-round decision in their 1939 rematch to take back the lightweight crown and end his golden period as simultaneous 3-weight champion, ending what, but for a sole DQ loss would've been a 57-fight winning streak in the process. Referee Arthur Donovan took 5 rounds from Armstronfor persistent low blows from the frustrated little phenom. #henryarmstrong #hammerinhank #3weightchampion #threeweightchamp #louambers #theherkimerhurricaine #lightweightchampion #p4p #pound4pound #alltimegreats #boxinglegends #boxingmasters #boxinggenius #kingsofthering #boxingheroes #legendaryboxers #legendaryfighters #boxinghistory #boxing #fighters #legends

The Second Coming: No ease back in fight for Ali! 3 years out of the ring and straight back in with a real toughie in Irish Jerry Quarry for his first fight back which was as much a massive black cultural event as it was just a regular great mtach up and the return of the man who had come full circle and was now something of The Peoples Champion after standing firm on Vietnam and being front and centre of the civil rights movement generally, the man who had 3 years before been something of a public enemy no.1, was now viewed as a martyr figure who sacrificed the best years of his career on a moral principle. You only had to take one look at the ringside crowd to see how much the social dynamic had shifted in just 3 years. The fight itself? Just as things were starting to heat up a frustrated Quarry suffered a pretty bad cut over his eye and the referee decided it wasnt lookin good and the fight was stopped in round 3. Ali was still undefeated and in the eyes of many still Champion. #muhammadali #thegreatest #ali #goat #heavyweightchamp #peopleschamp #irishjerryquarry #jerryquarry #heavyweightcontender #jerryquarryvsmuhammadali #alltimegreats #boxinglegends #kingofthering #knockoutkings #boxingroyalty #legendaryboxers #legendaryfighters #greatfighters #boxinghero #boxinghistory #boxing #boxers #legends #icon
