🥊"...and Judge Thyssterboxing..scores it 117...112 for Golovkin!! 😁🙌 - for what its worth heres the breakdown after rewatching it again in the cold light of day (AND IMPORTANTLY WITHOUT THE COMMENTARY) : Round 1: 10-9 Golovkin, GGG Continually backing Canelo up behind a consistent jab boxed him around the ring continually Canelo threw virtually nothing (just a 15 second spell where he opened up) pattern of the fight established in the very first round. ound 2: 10-9 Golovkin, again overall just did more work and made the fight, got Canelo's attention for the first time in this round too.
Round3: 10-9 Canelo, a very good round from Canelo, aggressive setting Golovkin back and opening up on him impreessively. Round 4: 10-9 Canelo, following up on a good 3rd round his first real success of the fight Canelo has another good round in the 4th, very good defensively and looking like he's starting to warm into the fight.Round 5: First tear-up round Golovkin lands the best punch of the fight so far close because both trading big shots but Golovkin doing all the pressing. Golovkin round 10-9
Round 6: 10-9 Golovkin making the fight continually its Golovkin all the way in this round Canelo doesn't get a look-in Round 7: 10-9 Golovkin, Canelo really starting to look like he's feeling the pace and the continual steady pressure. Round 8: 10-9 Canelo, is Canelo getting a 2nd wind, he does SO MUCH BETTER when he takes the fight to Golovkin and punches aggressively and backs GGG up
Round 9: 10-9 GGG, very discouraging round for Canelo this one - steamroller stuff from GGG really starting to grind the resistance out of Canelo now Round 10: Round of the fight, so much heart from Canelo and great 1st minute, possibly hurting GGG but then but then over the 2nd & 3rd minutes GGG punching him back into place again and Canelo really starting to get ground down again by the end of the round 10-9 GGG Round 11: Canelo basically hanging in there now - the previous round obviously took a lot out of Canelo and he's using this to get some life back in his legs and just get through unscathed. As a result GGG 10-9 Round 12: Couldn't split them in the last Canelo leaving it all in the ring.

Robinson Vs Basilio: their first war reminded me of the 'Brawl In Montreal' between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran in 1980 - the intensity, the palpable (almost uneasy) feeling of dislike in there, the refusal of either to allow even one punch without a return one (to ridiculous levels) the contrast in PERSONALITY styles but the machismo in refusing to budge trying to out do eachother, Robinson getting drawn into trying to prove he could have a tear up with the rough brawler and still be too good and liking that it wound up Basilio further, the unbeleivable exchanges and back and forth, the more blue collar Basilio fighting the physical and dynamic differences belligerently and Robinson the sulky prettyboy in Basilio's eyes matching him all the way to save face but giving up those differences and allowing Basilio the type of tear up he wanted. And at the end almost controversy on the scorecards but Basilio still coming through to take it and upsetting the established Robinson (although not in his own eyes) and taking his title off him setting up an obvious mouth watering return knowing Robinson's stung diva pride.

Lightning Strikes Twice as Welterweight Champ Carmen Basilio, caught in the glare of the ringside flash cameras, rematches, and again finishes tough Tony DeMarco - the man he took the title from 5 months previous, this time at 2:54 of round 12 of 15 of a fight DeMarco was again winning at the time of the stoppage - which came just 2 seconds later than in that first fight 5 months before.

The Big Man gives little Naz something which he probably could've done with more of in his own career, a comforting arm around his shoulder. Two virtuoso's in their times Ali had seen and done more than The Prince would ever do but maybe recognised that the guidance just wasn't there for him and that the flamboyance and flash were only ever gunna take him so far with without the substance to back it up.

Robert Villemain offers Ray Robinson an exagerated peek-a-boo look almost teasing him to hit him straight between the gloves...and Robinson would oblige - taking a 15 round decision and the Pennsylvania State Middleweight Title in Philadelphia 1950.

"The word 'great' is an over used word today. Ezzard Charles was naturally great. When he was a Middleweight I don't know if even Ray Robinson could've beaten him." ATG trainer Ray Arcel on Ezzard Charles.

Ezzard Charles looking in perfect condition ahead of I think his best moment as a Heavyweight, defending his title in emphatic style with an absolute peach of a right hand, technically perfect with little effort but near blew the top of Pat Valentino's head off - one of my favourite one punch finishes in history - a thing of beauty - and Pat Valentino a VERY under rated and worthy challenger for the title and a man of great technical ability himself to go with rugged fortitude he really pressed Charles hard and didn't do it by simply trying to bull rush him - he tried fo box with one of the great technicians in boxing history and acquitted himself very, very well and kept up a good work rate while staying in controland not going to peices which a lot would and made a brave effort to rise rise when stopped but that punch was pure class from Charles - think he liked it too and allowed himself a little clench of his fist at his own work.

Floyd Johnson pulling out all the stops for his weigh-in with Harry Wills sporting some rather fetching sock suspenders - hey they were PRACTICAL!? They didn't have elasticated soaks in my day you know!
Not to be out done, Harry opts to go barefoot but goes for the towel wrapped-up into a nappy look as he thought the suspenders were a bit on the kinky side 😁
Aside from the fashion stakes, Wills (vying for a shot at Jack Dempsey) proved he was the top cat in the ring aswell, effectively ending the, at one time promising career of Johnson with an emphatic first round win.
Floyd, at one point had been considered there-or-there-abouts a top-5 contender with some good wins against heavyweight title challenger Bill Brennan (who had damn near tore Dempsey's ear off his head), aswell as big Fred Fulton and he'd also won on a DQ against Kid Norfolk, but he may just have been one of those fighters who was maybe over matched too soon against much bigger and more experienced men a la Fulton (who he had to survive a bad last round against to get away with a decision), and a comebacking but still ox-strong former Heavyweight Champion Jess Willard when Floyd was only 22 and with a loss to a young future Heavyweight Champion Jack Sharkey, Johnson became something of feisty guy to give you rounds without necersarily being a threat to beat you but his defeat spelled the end for him altogether and further underlined Wills' intentions.

5 years before his career ended feistily when he shut Sonny Liston's right eye within one round and gave him a bit of a scare before being dropped and stopped by the wounded bear, Big Nino in his peak had Heavyweight Legend Rocky Marciano in his crosshairs but dropped the ball at the final hurdle again when Archie Moore shut one of HIS eyes and then proceeded to give him a drubbing on the blind side in a Las Vegas eliminator for a shot at being Marciano's number 49. It was tough for Nino to face but maybe he didn't quite get over the frustration and he would never quite be the same fighter he was before his dream of a shot at the title drifted out of reach but it was a shame a Valdes fight never got to materialise, whether Nino really would've been Marciano's kryptonite as some critics have suggested is debatable but it would've been one damn interesting fight Marciano wouldve been giving up 5 inches in height and probably 2 stone in weight not to mention 10 or 12 inches in reach to a big punching dangerman who would've been flying high had he got that shot he didn't quite land. My dad for one (a big Marciano admirer himself always said to me he always wondered how he would've done against 'that big Cuban').

Sonny's 'Chicago Test' against big Cuban bomber Nino Valdes now at the tail end but still considered dangerous, and the man that missed a showdown with Marciano by Archie Moore's whiskers back in '55 and who once got a decision win against Ezzard Charles (although Ezz insisted "he caught me on my worst night") though at the tail end was considered Liston's acid test, the fight where Liston would prove he was 'the goods' and after the first round things actually looked a little worrying all of a sudden. Liston's right eye closed alarmingly towards the end of the opening round virtually tight shut from Valdes' long left and Valdes had even made Liston, freeze up from some big punches in a round he clearly won and made Liston look bad in. In the 2nd round things still weren't going as planned for the Liston corner with Valdes seemingly perfectly willing to match Liston on the infighting too only 2 rounds in an alarm bells were ringing but this is where Liston rose to another gear a one eyed fighter at the start of the 3rd he went into overdrive and proved how deadly he was and from nowhere launched into a stream of haymakers that had the big Cuban tottered who from nowhere himself uncorked a huge left hook that really shook Liston and had him blinking his one good eye before he fired again with a monster left and right that shocked and then poleaxed Nino and left him slumped to hurt to beat the count in time. Nino had definitely tested his whiskers but old stone face seemed pretty much impervious to being hurt and with one eye had simply steam rolled a guy who most didn't trade with. Post fight Liston said he wanted new Champion Ingemar Johannson next but already people in the heavyweight division were starting to get selective hearing when Liston's name was mentioned.

If Sonny Liston was the only man who George Foreman usually had to give ground to, then George Foreman was one of the few men able to make powerhouse Tommy Morrison completely change his style for one night and turn himself into a stick & move artist for his own safety.

RIP Muhammad Ali,once a legend remains a legend
Like he always said:'I am the greatest. I said that even before I knew I was. I figured that if I said it enough, I would convince the world that I was really the greatest'.

The massive hammer fists of Sonny Liston render the notion that Floyd Patterson was the legitimate Champion of any division with a Sonny Liston in it as simply ridiculous. Just like with Tyson and Spinks in '88 it took 2 minutes for everyone to find out just why Patterson had been steered away from Liston for so long. This was 'no-fight'. Possibly the biggest mismatch of any of 'changing of the guard' in heavyweight history the difference in size and strength was colossal - they were, really, different breeds, man against boy maybe doesn't do it justice. Possibly grisly bear versus deer caught in the headlights would be more apt. A rematch, at best set up more, to help the well liked Patterson exorcise his own personal demons at having folded with so little resistance in the first fight, was, in reality, masking the real truth, that Patterson's lightheavyweight frame was simply unable to absorb the power of a behemoth like Liston. It was really like Liston had been Champion all along and Patterson really didn't belong in the ring with him which was a shame for Patterson, an otherwise fine Champion and possibly one of the most genuinely loved and respected fighters in US heavyweight history. Patterson tried to ride the storm of the recurring nightmare but only succeeded in lasting about 5 seconds long in the rematch. But there was really no shame in losing to Liston like that, a man shrouded in a lot of secrecy - still considered by some, to be 'secretly', the most fearsome heavyweight of them all.
