Work still in progress. I decided that it would be best to paint the sides of this piece as it's small and on board, this way it doesn't necessarily need a frame. I used the same chromatic mix of blue black I use for my backgrounds. I mix this from 2, sometimes 3 colours. There is no black oil colour in my palette even though my backgrounds appear black.

I thought I would add a close up. First layer is finished so a few days to dry before the next layer.

Work in progress first layer completed with a second layer on the red bud and the deepest shadow lower left. I will need to let this work dry before I work on the second layer of the peony petals as Titanium white which I've mixed with a warm white, takes a longer time to dry. Meanwhile I will start on the second small work, I'm tossing up between a single Magnolia bloom and a rather lovely rose...decisions, decisions 🤔

The last week of the @parnellgallery Flower Show so if you want to see the works hanging together pop along, it finishes Tuesday 25th. This work is "New Beginnings" - Oil on linen 1metre square

Wip: First layer almost there. The background dried amazingly quickly so it got a second coat today. It's such a pretty peony that I think I may do a different peony for the second work for the gallery. I'm loving the board, I think the oils behave better and there is no sinking in as you may get on linen or canvas. I used my normal gesso for the primer but it did have a first coat of GAC 100 so maybe that helps create a less absorbant surface. The trickiest part is working on blocking in the tiny stamens. I do think it's coming to life though 🤗 TURN ON SOUND

Wip: Small works in progress, it's a wrap for today. Anyone guess what flower yet? And, I absolutely love working on panel it acts so differently from linen but I'm loving blending on it 🤗🤗

Detail: Sorry for the wobbly video and the downlight reflecting on the surface but hopefully you get the gist of these Heritages roses that can be previewed on the 11th September at @parnellgallery 5.30 - 7.30pm. Thank you so much @flowersonlawn for the original reference photo. These stunning roses are from a one acre garden near Havelock. Heritage Roses - Oil on linen 90cm x 1200cm

Varnished and drying. It only takes a day to become touch dry, after an hour I will prop it upright usually front side to the wall but not till the tack has gone. I put on a very thin layer of Gamvar as it's basically a simple protection for the painted layers to protect against surface damage, household dirt, dust and UV light. A great tip if you paint in oils and you paint a lot of white flowers is to keep your canvas drying in natural light . If you store a painting away in storage or on flat drawers the whites will darken however they will return to white if you expose it to sunlight for a few days. I don't mean direct sun but near a light filled window will suffice. "New Beginnings" - Oil on linen 1 metre square. Linen canvas stretched by Dean @studioartsupplies.

Detail: Almost finished the second layer on the purple Anenome. It's just detail to be added when it's dry. Thank goodness for the drying medium which is speeding up drying time tremendously 🤗

Wip: Detail, glazing shadows on the vase before I start work on the second layer of the two lower Anemones. When this glaze is dry I may glaze with burnt umber to take the colour down a notch but will leave it until I can see how the flowers look when they are all finished.

Finished: "After the Rain" - Oil on linen 1200cm X 900cm. This work will be exhibited and for sale at @parnellgallery from the 11th to 25th of September as part of their group show, "Parnell Gallery Flower Show". Now onto the wall to finish drying.

Working back into the Anenome painting on the flower that has two layers of paint. Painting in highlights. I will make a few adjustments with the mid tones adding some deeper areas but will paint in my highlights first. I think most artists paint them last of all and I am really but when I do I always find some areas that need some deeper shadows to help the form of some of the petals crinkles.

Wip: Upside down, I painted the upper background today. It makes it easier to sit down and paint rather than stand up. I usually paint a background with 2-3 layers, drying each layer thoroughly first. I don't use black it's a chromatic mix of @mhoilpaints Prussian Blue and Burnt Sienna which I judge with my eye leaning towards a slightly green black by adding more Burnt Sienna until I feel the edge of blue has gone. It's popping now and round 2 on the flowers will continue 🤗

I haven't finished the purple flower, instead I worked on the shadows on the vase as it felt dry today. I painted over the leaf I had at the bottom right as I've now decided to make the background merge into the shadow on the vase. This shadow will gradually darken with subsequent glazing until I'm happy with the contrast, it's got quite some way to go yet. I have to wait for each glaze to dry completely before I can paint another layer of shadow. I choose to glaze my shadows so that I achieve transparency but depth to the colour. Tomorrow I will paint in the background at the top and try to finish the smaller white Anenome which already has a second layer of colour.

I've started working back into the purple Anenome adding light, I need to glaze the shadows to deepen the colour but I've run out of brushes so will do that tomorrow as I don't have much painting time today. The added light has pushed this flower further forward and it looks a bit odd until I add glazes of shadow to the vase beneath. The vase is touch dry but not dry enough for glazing.

Detail: I've finished the first layer and roughly painted in the stamens. I've discovered I love painting the bulbous part of the stamens so I can't wait to give these more detail in the next layer and work on the stalks.

WIP: First colour layer going on the large anenome to the left side. I'm having a late lunch break now, I hope to get the first layer completed today apart from the stamens which in hindsight should have been painted first. This work once finished is going to be a rather striking painting if I say so myself. There is still more layers and detail to the rest of the painting. 😊
