MOST RECENT

DAY 8: OK so I couldn't resist a little work today and started the second layer on the larger rose. Still a lot of petals to paint, however the ones I have worked on are starting to make it pop and once the background goes in it will be absolutely "popping" 🤗🤗

DAY 7: Still working on the first layer, it's certainly a little more difficult to get the tone of the shadows right with no underpainting, so there will be a lot of adjustments when I start round two on the blooms.

I enjoyed painting the larger bud. The stem on this bud will eventually merge into my dark background. Monday I will start on the amazing striped rose which will be the largest bloom in this work. SWIPE FOR CLOSER DETAIL INCLUDING THE BUD.

Progress to date...First layer of colour only.

DAY 6: I worked only 3 hrs today, I should really have finished the rose to the left but my eyes felt too bad to finish the last few petals, so I'll complete them while hubby is playing soccer tomorrow. I love the colourful shadows on this first layer, they will be adjusted a little on the second layer and there will be brighter highlights added later. I really think this painting is going to be beautiful and I'm very excited about every rose as they are so different 🤗🤗. Thank you @flowersonlawn for the beautiful reference shot 😚

DAY 5: Not a lot of progress today as life outside the studio was calling. I started to work on an out of focus slightly squished rose at the bottom and a few petals to the right. I also placed some other out of focus detail that will eventually merge into the background. The first image gives more of an indication of the size of the blooms.

DAY 4: First layer completed on this pretty rose. I'm using a drying medium so I will leave it a couple of days and then start the second layer. Meanwhile I'll work on another area. Selling another piece in the gallery was great motivation today. SWIPE FOR PROGRESS SHOTS AND THE ENTIRE WORK ON THE EASEL.

SOLD - Singing the Blues, oil on linen 120 x 90cm.. Now hanging in its new home by the sea, a most fitting place for its vibrant shades of blue and purple. Thank you @parnellgallery for making my day and giving me the opportunity to display and sell my oil paintings through your lovely gallery 😚

DAY 3: New work in progress. Painting a subtle rose at the bottom of a large work. Today I started the first colour layer I decided not to do an underpainting but to dive straight in. I started blocking in the rose. I managed to mix a white with a tinge of peach using @mhoilpaints warm white and a touch of Norma Poppy Red (the colour will be stronger on the next layer). In the video clip at the end you will see me applying the paint with my @rosemarybrushes Masters choice brush. I love the Masters choice range as they allow me to really scrub in the oil paint or softly blend, depending on how I use the brush. I just want to add...this is my own personal opinion, I'm not sponsored. Believe it or not this is 3.5 hours work. I haven't printed out my reference shot yet which was given to me by @flowersonlawn so was using my phone to look at the photo which is a little tricky 🤔SWIPE FOR PROGRESS SHOTS AND VIDEO CLIP

Work in progress, DAY 2: I have painted a layer of tinted gesso over the pencil drawing to seal the pencil and cover the white canvas at the same time but be transparent enough to allow the pencil to show through. I tint the gesso with a fluid acrylic by Golden. After this only pure oils and linseed or an oil drying medium will be used. There are many oil mediums, at the moment I'm using W&N liquin but plan to swap over to Gamblin's equivalent as it is less toxic as with my autoimmune problems, I react highly to solvents in the air.

I've spent all evening drawing up my next work, "Heritage Roses". The photographer @flowersonlawn has kindly allowed me to reproduce the photo as a painting. This is the first time I have painted from someone else's photography, so I'm praying I do justice to these wonderful flowers. The painting is 90cm wide by 120cm high. I was going to make it a lot bigger but got a shock at the cost of the size I wanted, forgetting it would need to be stretched over hardwood which greatly increases the price which would have been nearly $700 before I even started drawing up. This is still a large work and will fit in with the sizes of the other works for my joint exhibition in September.

Works in progress - These two are almost there, I am drawing up a new one as I speak. I hope to get these two fully completed and signed within 2 weeks while working in between on the new one. It motivates me when I start something new as my mind is fresh again.

Another perspective, I flipped it over so I could paint along the bottom edge. I don't paint the sides of my canvas fully, I allow the original surface to show and the white gesso is a great contrast to my dark background. I mask off the sides and take the background around the edge about 1cm. I used to paint the sides by continuing my painting onto it, however this is now my preferred look. My canvases are 3cm deep, well almost 4cm as they are a rounded edge with the linen I use. My canvases are made up for me @studioartsupplies who do a superb job. I'm currently having a canvas reverse stretched for a work where I'm having the look of raw linen in the background....excited about this piece but starting my heritage roses first.

I spent the morning pushing the lower petals into the background which now adds a little drama to the lower right side. All I have to do now is work on the finer detail areas, deepening some of the shadows on the petals, refining highlights and a little more work on the bud but I'm almost there 🤗 Addendum....I may just glaze over those lower petals with burnt umber but will see what it looks like when it's fully dry.

Started on the second layer of the lower leaves...they are rose leaves as in my original reference shot I had peonies and roses which I cropped to a square image. I will finish this layer and complete the background in this area at the next sitting.

If you get the opportunity to call by, I now have two works fo sale in @parnellgallery, Auckland. Please contact the gallery for details, they can ship worldwide. L'amitie went in the window yesterday, shame it missed Hillary Clinton's Parnell shopping trip last weekend 😄I actually have a watercolour of Irises in the Sultan of Brunei's Palace that was comissioned as a gift for his first wife. I've often wondered if it hangs beside a Monet 😄😄 or has made its way to the back of a cupboard 😄😅 L'amitie - oil on linen, 120cm X 85cm

A short video of detail. I've almost completed the second layer on the large peony, just a few to do on the right hand side. Then it's playing with light and detail.

Working away on the final layer on the petals around the peony centre. The very last work to be done on this area is adding some more highlights and a little detail. When I talk in layers, each layer still shows through the colours below as I work with mainly transparent pigments. Final detail is where I use opaque colours. When I get to the final detail I don't work from my reference photo, I step back and look for petals that might need to be brought forward a little, which may mean a fine darker outline in some areas. Or crevices that need deepening. It's also when I may paint detail on certain petals. For me it is these moments that bring something special to a work and my most favourite part of the painting.

Work in progress...Still quite a way to go....I think I'm nearly there and then I realise I'm not but here's some progress shots going backwards in time. I wonder if you can tell the petals I haven't yet done the second layer. I haven't touched the leaves on the lower left yet, they are just blocked in. I have two works on the go and am starting another one on Monday 🤗

Work in progress...working on the lower petals swipe for "before". You will notice the difference in the shadow which is no longer bright viridian, yet the viridian still shows through my glaze. I am working on defining the petals as I work up to the centre of the flower. I haven't finished the petals adjacent to the centre. When this layer is dry it's then just a matter of glazing a few areas with deeper shadows and adding fine detail and highlights.

Top image my reference photograph, bottom image my painting which will be varnished this week and delivered to @parnellgallery early next week. Sorry the app has cropped off the top half and some of the bottom of the images. I got the idea of comparing them from @henrybosak who shared his ref shot of an old tractor above his painting. Check out Henry's work as he is a master of reflections and also paints beautifully detailed flowers too. "L'amitie" - Oil on linen 120 x 85 cm.
