Scientists have confirmed a form of water that is simultaneously solid and liquid. It is the latest advance in the study of water, a seemingly simple substance that can shift between many different configurations. Marius Millot, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in #California, describes this new form as superionic water, which consists of a rigid lattice of oxygen atoms through which positively charged hydrogen nuclei move. It is not known to exist naturally anywhere on Earth, but it may be bountiful farther out in the solar system, including in the mantles of Uranus and Neptune. LLNL researchers have discovered a high-resolution 3-D printing technique capable of producing nanoscale features smaller than one-hundredth the width of a human hair. Two-photon lithography (TPL) typically requires a thin glass slide, a lens and an immersion oil to help the laser light focus to a fine point where curing and printing occurs. It differs from other 3-D-printing methods in resolution, because it can produce features smaller than the laser light spot, a scale no other printing process can match. Previous techniques built structures from the ground up, limiting the height of objects because the distance between the glass slide and lens is usually 200 microns or less. By turning the process on its head—putting the resist material directly on the lens and focusing the laser through the resist—researchers can now print objects multiple millimeters in height. The only limiting factor is the time it takes to build, so researchers will next look to parallelize and speed up the process. A team of researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have successfully combined several separate lasers into a superbeam—just like the Death Star’s Superlaser. For the first time, nine of the National Ignition Facility’s (NIF) 192 laser beams were combined to produce a directed pulse of light that was nearly four times the energy of any individual beam. Scientists and laser experts have long maintained that a superbeam could never work due to the properties of lasers—theory says that rather than combining their energy, the beams would just pass through one another. That was true, until the team of LLNL researchers added plasma to the concept. Plasma generally creates instabilities when combined with intense laser beams. However, by controlling an instability that causes the transfer of energy when beams cross, the researchers were able to combine the energy from multiple beams into a single powerful beam.
