One of Auckland’s more famous beaches. During a hot day this beach is usually packed, but don’t fret Auckland has plenty of beautiful beaches on offer. Great to visit to enjoy a meal near the ocean, take up surf paddling boarding or enjoy the walk along Tamaki Drive. A favourite past time of most kiwis is grabbing some fish and chips to enjoy on the sand. The brilliant red tree, similar to the bottle brush tree found in America and the UK, in the far right of the photo is iconic to New Zealand. Called a pōhutakawa, it is also known as the New Zealand Christmas flower as it seems to bloom the best around Christmas time, which is when this photo was taken.
Mission Bay was originally part of Kohimarama and was bought from the Crown in the early 1840s. The name Mission Bay takes it’s name from the Melanesian Mission, which was set up at the end of the 1840s by Anglican Bishop George Augustus Selwyn.
The stone buildings here are made from scoria rock which comes from the volcanic island Rangitoto Island which you can see in the distance across the water.
The area also holds historical significance as it was considered the first time Māori and Pākeha (non Māori) held a council, seen as the first step towards creating Māori representation in the government of New Zealand.
From 1915 to the end of the 1920s, the famous Walsh Brothers, New Zealand’s pioneers of aviation, established their flying school here using the bay to land their seaplanes. It is said that at least a third of the WWI active pilots from New Zealand were trained here and as such the bay is also known as Flying School Bay. .
