Kwita Izina is a Rwandan ceremony of giving a name to a newborn baby gorilla. It is well celebrated with live performances from dancers, musicians and poets. .
Also, national and international VIP guests are invited to name the new born gorillas. .
It is organized by the Rwanda government (the Rwandan Development Board (RDB)), which aims to create awareness both locally and internationally, about the importance of protecting the mountain gorillas and their habitats in the Virunga Mountains in the north of Rwanda. .
Because the mountain gorillas are one of the most endangered species in the world. There are an estimated 880 mountain gorillas left in the world. They only live in Africa and over half of the population lives in Rwanda. .
For the first time in recent history, the mountain gorilla population in Rwanda has shown a slight increase. Mostly due to the conservation efforts of the RDB. .
The celebration of Kwita Izina is meant to increase these successes even more.
