What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Mediterranean? That's right - body hair! A lot of it! Even the plants here are hairy! 🌸🌸🌸
Being rooted means that they have made some really interesting adaptations like plant hairs, called trichomes. Trichomes serve a variety of functions like deterring herbivores and insects from eating their bodies. The trichomes of nettle plants (Urtica) are hollow like porcupine quills and break to release histamine and acetylcholine into the soft tissue of an animal who brushes the leaves. Histamine causes an unpleasant itching sensation. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that contracts muscle tissue and helps spread the histamine reaction. Together they create the temporary skin rash you get when come into contact with nettles. 🌸One of the best known examples of insect deterents are the cannabinoids produced by #cannabis plants. Those super frosty hairs brah protect the plant from insect damage, but people have found good use in one of the resins in medicine and recreation.
For many plants, like this downy woundwort, trichomes play a more practical role. Growing in sunny arid regions where rain is infrequent, those hairs protect the plant from drying out. They reduce heat load, reduce leaf temperature, reduce transpiration rates, and protect the plant from getting sunburned.
