If you go to Sand Mountain in winter, as I did last week, you can catch it in solitude at dawn and dusk when few people are plying its cold slopes. I spent the night in my car so I could photograph it at last light and early light. Should have brought firewood. The campsites have fire rings and I would have enjoyed the heat in the 20 degree morning chill. A hot Denver omelette and coffee at Middlegate Station got me through.
