#TheLodger #1944 #JohnBrahm #LairdCregar #MerleOberon #GeorgeSanders #masterpiece This highly fictionalized account of the Jack the Ripper story is atmospheric, gloomy, and sad. And with the matchless Laird Cregar in the title role, “The Lodger” is a captivating and rewarding watch, with mood and scares aplenty. The extremely unlikely task of making one of the most infamous serial killers ever into a sympathetic character is accomplished here in no small part due to Cregar’s pathos-filled performance. He is frightening but mostly he’s just a pitiable wretch completely at odds with his environment and fellow humans. There are so many wonderful moments in this film, but the thrilling finale is starkly chilling and unforgettable. Every bit (or practically) as good as John Brahm’s other masterpiece with Cregar and Sanders, 1945’s “Hangover Square,” this one should not be missed.

Today watching another new Film-Noir for the first time called: "I Wake Up Screaming". What interests me about this movie is its star Betty Grable. Always read about her, even once saw her featured in a book that was about famous pin-up girls in the 1940s, but sadly I had never seen any of her films. Judging by these photos, the movie looks right up my alley 🙂🤗. #iwakeupscreaming

“Have you seen Joe?” Sings the gorgeous Linda Darnell playing the manipulative vixen Netta, in HANGOVER SQUARE (1945) opposite Laird Cregar and George Sanders. She started her career at 20th Century Fox in 1939 aged 15 playing dewey-eyed heroines. After falling foul of mogul Darryl F Zanuck by getting married (and resisting his advances), she rebounded in 1944 after being named one of Hollywood’s most beautiful women by Look magazine and starring in a trio of siren roles which totally reinvented her image - SUMMER STORM (1944), FALLEN ANGEL and HANGOVER SQUARE (both 1945). Coincidentally, she winds up dead in all three. As good as she was playing the sweet heroine in films like STARDUST (1939) and MARK OF ZORRO (1940) and BLOOD AND SAND (1941), she was best playing bad. Critics began to really pay attention - there was even Oscar talk for ANGEL - and suddenly she had a new career ahead of her. Like most of Fox’s female stars of the 40s (Jeanne Crain, Gene Tierney, Anne Baxter etc), she had utility across the slate and appeared in such diverse films as the hits MY DARLING CEMENTINE (1946), ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM (1946), FOREVER AMBER (1947), EVERYBODY’S DOING IT (1948), A LETTER TO THREE WIVES (1949) and NO WAY OUT (1950). She left Fox in 1952 after 14 years - aged only 29 - but her starring days were practically over. #lindadarnell #lairdcregar #georgesanders #hangoversquare #fallenangel #summerstorm #fox #star #classicfilm #classicinema #filmnoir #musical

Laird Cregar (1913 – 1944) was an American stage and film actor, best known for his villainous performances in films such as "I Wake Up Screaming" and "The Lodger". As his popularity grew he felt he could get more leading man roles if he lost weight. He began crash dieting and taking prescribed amphetamines. This destroyed his system and he had to undergo abdominal surgery. A few days after the surgery he suffered a heart attack and died. A brilliant career cut short, at age 31. #lairdcregar #Hollywood #tragicdeath

Laird Cregar in "The Lodger" (1944). I've been watching his filmography the last couple of days and damn! What an actor and man! 👌👌👌Just had to sketch him. Sadly he died tragic and far too young :/
