Our hearts are so full. What a wonderful morning creating with you LADYBOSSes! 👏🏻🎨💕 #ladybossfm

The first #ladybossfm event has begun! Happy Galentine’s Day! 🌹#ilovefargo #moorheadproud

Chelsea Thorson is a maker and owner of Make Room in Fargo – an art gallery, studio and store downtown. Through her business, she encourages other people to discover that they are also makers – either for the first time or re-discovering that creativity. She helps her students greet their inner artist. 🌹
“When someone is really shy or lacking confidence artistically, and then all of a sudden they tap into their creative self, they begin to love it! It’s the best moment of my job! It’s like an ‘I told you so moment’”, she says.

What’s your journey?
It kind of starts with being in school. I was an architecture student. I realized I was in the wrong field, I didn’t like the idea of being behind a computer the whole time. After, I started becoming a studio artist. When I graduated I didn’t have any desire going to an office. That kind of brought me here to where I have my own space.

Has it been stressful?
Being a business owner is always stressful. My rent here is 10x more than my previous spot. Though, I felt the same way in the little space. Now, it’s way more money going out and coming in.
This all comes very natural to me – It’s what I know and trust. When I wake up in the morning I know I have this every day. It sounds much more stressful to work in someone else’s idea of a job. Actually, this is kind of awesome. ✨
What was the best career advice you’ve ever received or have to offer?
When of my lady boss mentors who owns Atomic Coffee gave me the best advice. I was asking her how do you know when you are ready to take the leap and purchase a new space. Her advice was: you know you are ready to move when if you lost everything you would still be ok.

Who is your hero and why?
My hero is my grandma! She is my hero because she is also an artist and she has been an independent woman her whole life – always marched to the beat of her own drum. She is blind now and still wants to make art. #ladybossfm

Happy Friday, girl gang!

LADYBOSS Feature: Simone Wai ✨

Simone Wai is a community builder and co-founder of Folkways, focused on creating magical moments to enhance people’s everyday lives. If you’ve been to the Red River Market, Christkindlmarkt, or the Alley Fair, watched the Canoe Parade or enjoyed the mobile sauna, you’ve experienced her work!

There’s been a huge (positive!) shift in the way people see and think about Fargo, and you’re a big part of that. Why was it important to you to become a community builder for Fargo?
I have done events pretty much my whole career. I have worked with people like artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, etc. And we just saw a need to collect those people and really change the attitudes and culture of the community. When I lived here as a highschooler, it wasn’t a place I wanted to start my career. I didn’t want to be a Fargoan. So for us, we wanted to show people the potential in our community and shift their attitude. ✨
What’s your best career advice?
It’s career and life advice: Not to take anything personally.
I am part of, but also outside of what I create. When we get surveys back from our events, there is always one crabby person. There are so many things that could be going on with someone’s life. ✨
Who is your hero and why?
I feel like I have so many friends that I look up to. I guess my local ladybosses are my heroes. I think of my friend Randi Kay who is killing it in her massage business. And my friend Amanda McDonald who is working on Giving Hearts Day. People who are just in their corner of their world being totally awesome. I’m so proud of them!

How are you taking better care of yourself in 2018?
A lot of saunaing. SADness (Seasonal Affect Disorder) is real, and saunaing is the most amazing way to combat that. You get the socializing and the firelight, and you’re so warm. I live in a 110 year old house; it’s never warm. I also take a lot of personal time. I work hard, and then relax hard. ✨
What books should every LADYBOSS read?
1. “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom,” by Don Miguel Ruiz
2. “Ishmael: A Novel,” by Daniel Quinn #ladybossfm #ilovefargo #moorheadproud

Could it be a more vulnerable, confident, authentic self? 💫

What women empowerment organizations are you giving to today? 💕 #GivingHeartsDay2018 #CountMe #ladybossfm
