#10 J A P A N - Kyoto Kahitsukan ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The museum of contemporary art features various exhibitions by international artists. On the 5th floor, you can find this beautiful sun garden which can be admired from the traditional tea ceremony room.

#9 J A P A N - Kyoto Zen Gardens
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Zen gardens are an experience you shouldn’t miss. There are many interpretations concerning meanings of the rocks in each garden - we were given pamphlets describing the garden as the river of life with waves in the gravel symbolizing the flow of the water. The rocks have also symbolic meaning like turtle rock lying upstream the river and representing struggles you face in life or treasure boat moving downstream when you face fortune. However, these interpretations are controversial. For me it all made sense - maybe for some of you, too.

The most beautiful gardens in Kyoto can be found at:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ryokan-ji
Tofuku-ji
Daitoku-ji
Daisen-in Temples ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

#8 J A P A N - Kyoto Tofuku-ji Temple
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While traveling to Japan in autumn or during cherry blossom (feb-april) is best to experience the colors of Japanese gardens, we travelled in May, also to avoid the crowds. But we also realized that any garden looked beautiful and sophisticated to the tiny detail, with beautiful colors emerging through the saturated green, like here in the Tofuku-ji Temple gardens.

#7 J A P A N - Kyoto Arashiyama
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Definitely a must see, but unfortunately always packed during the day. Head there early to avoid the crowds - we took a cab from Kyoto which was also a great experience. Otherwise you can get there by bus and enjoy the walk through the grove and go to the Fushimi-Imari Taisha shrines.

#6 J A P A N - Kyoto Fushimi Inari-Taisha
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Kyoto might seem really touristy but it is always possible to find quiet spots. We spent 4 days here and chose to see the “bucketlist” stuff. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My recommendations below ⬇️⬇️⬇️ feel free to add anything in the comments:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bars:
L’EscaMoteur
Bar Bunkuyu (amazing little bar with one table)
Star bar (similar to the one in Tokyo)
Café independants (rather a pub)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Food:
Soba Kanei (most authentic restaurant I’be seen in Japan)
Sarasa Nishijin
Hafuu
Satsuki (nice river view)
Nishiki Market ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
VEGAN/VEGETARIAN:
VegOut, Choice, mimokuteki cafe ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Places to see:
Tofuku-ji Hojo Garden (must see!)
Kahitsukan Museum of Contemporary art
Mirei shigemori garden museum
Nijo Castle
Kinkaku-ji for amazing gardens
Arashiyama for the bamboo path
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shopping:
Shin Kyogoku Arcade

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hotels:
We stayed at kyoto apartment forest which was really cheap. Unfortunately, everything is really expensive in Japan so this was a good deal!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By the way the best way to get to Kyoto is by taking the train from Tokio - make sure to get Japan rail pass before your travels! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

#5 J A P A N - Kyoto Fushimi Inari-Taisha
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our next stop on our Japan Trip was Kyoto, the city of countless temples and shrines. One of my favorite sites was definitely the Fushimi Inari-Taisha shrine which is def symbolic for Kyoto. The trails up the mountain Imari are packed with shrines sponsored by companies or private individuals but also old ones. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Head all the way up (4 km) and try to choose side paths, then you’ll discover the quiet places in the surrounding woods.
