Been spending a lot of time with my Embryo LPs, contemplating the style, worldview and influence of the band’s leader, the late Christian Burchard. It’s hard to overstate how singular the bands he led were, or to over-celebrate the open mind with which he approached the world’s musical cultures, which made their way into the band’s music and their lifestyles. When I was playing ‘name your favorite #Krautrock bands’ with @madlib some years ago, he joked that his top 10 was ‘all Embryo.’ In a way it wasn’t a joke, as the band changed with its times and outside of them, from their earliest days as genius outliers in the movement to the prog jazz they recorded with legends Mal Waldron and Charlie Mariano to their later days with Christian’s daughter Marja and her musical cousins, including Jan and Max Weissenfeldt. So much of the current music I love has been influenced by him, he will remain a part of my everyday experience for the rest of my life I’m sure. RIP.
