Canadian & American Values Wish They Could be Sikh values.
Louis Riel, Metis leader (Metis are one of Canada's three Indigenous Peoples). Hung by the Canadian government for standing up for his people. Bhai Meva Singh. Hung by the Canadian government for getting justice for his people. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was once American values to own human beings. It was once Canadian values to kidnap children from their families. It was once American and Canadian values to take citizens, steal their property and put them in concentration camps because of their ethnic background. Canadian and American values change over time. Generally, these values have been getting better. They are more just and more equal. But they are not perfect, far from it. Almost all governments will make the politically expedient choice over the moral one. Justin Trudeau will approve pipelines even though he loves to talk about reconciliation with First Nations. Donald Trump will take away legal protection for tens of thousands of children and young adults who are deemed illegal, though he thinks they’re “great kids”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sikh values are not the values of individual Sikhs. They are not even the values of the Gurus. They are Divine values, revealed by our Guru Sahibs directly from Vahiguru Sahib ji. They are unchangeable, perfect and everlasting. They don’t bend for political expediency. They don’t shift to accommodate public opinion. They are not ignored so that the community can stop being discriminated against. These are values that you sit on a hot plate for five days for. These are values that you have your head cut off in the streets of Delhi for. These are values that you are bricked alive in a wall for. The gall of our community today to compare these Divine values to ones written on pieces of paper 230 and 150 years ago is astounding. We are a sovereign Nation that looked at the full might of some of the world’s most powerful empires bearing down on us and simply said, IDGAF, do what you want to us, but we are never ever backing down. ⠀

Can anyone explain why @faycalelkhourymp is grinning and waving whilst @justinpjtrudeau apologises for the #komagatamaru incident?!

Komagata Maru by @_artbyjapjit ・・・
It's an apology more than a century in the making.

Nearly 102 years after the Komagata Maru sailed into Vancouver, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has offered a full apology [2016] in the House of Commons for the government of the day's decision to turn away the ship, which was carrying hundreds of South Asian immigrants, most of whom were Sikhs. The Komagata Maru arrived on Canada's West Coast on May 23, 1914, anchoring in Vancouver's Coal Harbour. Nearly all of the 376 passengers were denied entry and the ship sat in the harbour for two months. It was ultimately forced to return to India and was met by British soldiers. Twenty passengers were killed and others jailed following an ensuing riot.

Canada Post [unveiled] a new stamp on May 6 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident, drawing attention to an exclusionary immigration policy that denied hundreds of Indian migrants’ entry into Canada in 1914.

I had the absolute pleasure of talking with the fine folks at @canartca magazine about my portrait series "Faces of the Komagata Maru". In the October issue of the magazine, Aaditya Aggarwal writes about the historic Canadian event. "In Ho's work, Singh is pristine, surrounded by white negative space, his beard unfurling like a tuft of cloud." #canadianart #komagatamaru #canadianhistory #art

Excited to see this powerful play #komagatamaru #stratfordontario
