Complete! The royal game of Ur!
Made of poplar board with some mystery wood inlay. The symbols and designs are kolrosed onto the board; a fine learning experience and first experiment with the method, but with a plot twist. Instead of rubbing soot or coffee grounds into the incisions and pricks, I took what I thought was my little bag of soot, but discovered when applying it that it was in actuality my bag of powdered pine pitch glue from waay back (I could smell it; pine pitch glue really does smell quite nice). As an experiment, I then hit the board with a heat gun (figuratively) in an attempt to melt the glue dust, and then applied a couple more dustings and heatings. The glue gave a nice color change to the whole board, lending it a nice antiquated dark tone and feel.
The game pieces are antler, half of which are stained with black walnut, and the tetrahedral dice are the same hard dark mystery wood as the board inlay; they too have had a black walnut bath like the antler chips.
I especially love the wood grain of the dice; it's so subtle and looks to me somehow simultaneously ancient and futuristic, like little sith holocrons or something. I don't know, maybe that last bit's a stretch ;)
