The story of Albanello from the protector of the varietal himself. James is in Sicily and heard it firsthand from Dr. Gulino. #knowyourgrowers

Albanello was last planted in 1970, before the majority of farmers in the area of Siracusa switched over to cultivate different grapes and to vegetable farming, abandoning the Albanello grape varietal.
When switching his family farm from vegetables back over to wine in the late 90s, Sebastiano became slightly obsessed with the long lost Albanello, is it was mentioned by so many important historic writers.
He spent years researching the grape, searching through abandoned properties, and comparing his findings with his research at one of the local libraries. The name of this library he jokingly told me to keep secret, although I think the secret is pretty safe, as all the hand written journals he was reading were in Latin.
After comparing his research with his time on abandoned vineyard sites, he was able to identify Albanello, replanting it on his property and releasing his first vintage in 2009. #drinkitalianwine #sicilia #albanello
