Konosuke Special Genkai Masakuni 390mm Honyaki Yanagiba with Mt. Fuji Hamon
We would just like to share what Brian, one of the sharpeners here at Tosho, said about this blade in an email. "...I opened the box again and saw the blade. I did not try to detect any flaws or imperfections, as I often try to do with any knives - a habit we build here at Tosho, I'm afraid. After spending a moment looking at the surface of the blade, I tried to imagine what I was seeing and how it made me feel. There were lots of things but I wanted to focus on an image, and found it. The traditional polishing technique Ivan used for this blade reminds me of a crisp winter morning with gentle fog blanketing a frosted mountain peak. It is peaceful, a unique feeling when looking at a tool meant to cut, if you think about it.
In amongst professional sharpeners, a high-level polishing is often done with certain motifs to bring out the characters of the steel as best as one can perceive and understand them. This truly shows Ivan's ability to create a painting, with his traditional techniques on a steel canvas, using stones as his paints. I highly encourage whoever gets to own and use this blade to 'look' at it for a moment. And try to see what it shows you."
