One night I was endlessly flipping through Netflix, I stopped on Love from Gaspar Noe.
Now, I am very familiar with the work of Noe. I know with filmmakers like him, you know what you are getting into while also realizing you should be ready for anything.
I saw the only name I recognized in the cast was that of Karl Glusman who was in a minor role in The Neon Demon. So, I decided to select play.
I was NOT ready for that opening scene. I had to pause the movie and do a little research. If you have seen this, you know what I am talking about. Now, I am also an adult and I am not easily offended. I was simply just shocked this was on Netflix.
Love is about Glusman who plays Murphy, an American living in Paris who enters into an emotionally and highly sexual relationship with Electra played by Aomi Muyock.
I found myself genuinely bored with this film. Once I got past the subject matter, which for those who have not seen it yet, is explicitly sexual, I just had a difficult time caring for any of these self destructive individuals.
It wasn't until a 3D specific scene which made me laugh out loud, that I had realized that maybe Noe was running out of ways to shock us all. By the time the 2 hours and 15 minutes were over, I felt an incredible sense of what the hell did I just watch?
Fans of Noe will undoubtedly love this, most will hate it. I've seen it often described as art. I'm going to chalk it up to just cheap thrills.
My Score: 5/10
