I 🖤 Huckabees (2004) so difficult to categorize this film. the big picture, the meaning of life, are all of life’s events connected somehow or are they singular?
are coincidences related, are we part of a larger existence or floating on our own? cause and effect, infinity, nothingness, worldly perceptions. questions that are never answered, metaphysical existence, the direction of our lives. just trivial things really….! and all these heavy themes, thoughts and dissertations wrapped up in a screwball comedy envelope flavored with touches of buñuel and magritte. david o russell’s film delivers all these things and is likely one of the most designed films I’ve ever been involved with, courtesy of the uniquely talented production designer k k barrett. by the time I had joined in, david and kk had devised a visual plan that played against type a bit, but ultimately was so inspired. the film would be light and relatively high key with a very tightly controlled pastel color palette of primarily blues, greens and grays for key players and the world of huckabee’s. sets were decidedly stark in nature with inspirations pulled from modern expressionist painting and french cinema (and anything absurd we could think of). the feeling was that the subject matter was sometimes so exceedingly cerebral, that visually we had to lighten the tone. the only film I can remember shooting on fuji film stock, the pastel color rendition of their ‘reala’ negatives interested me, but in testing we were disappointed as the richness in the black tones just wasn’t there. until I noticed that when the camera ramped up when rolling and slowed down when we cut, the richness came back just for an instant. so I went back and shot more testes but this time rating and exposing the film at 200 asa instead of the recommended 400 asa and there it was, the look we were after. at the lower asa setting and effectively overexposing the negative by a stop, the blacks and colors were richer.
