Kit Hiller ‘St Petersburg’ opens Tuesday 29 May from 6pm to 8pm, 35 Derby Street, Collingwood, Melbourne.
This luscious series of recent paintings by renowned Tasmanian artist, Christine (Kit) Hiller was produced over the last two years and focuses on the artist’s time spent in Russia. Painting her experiences and encounters mostly from memory, Hiller captures people, places and the vibrant culture of St Petersburg. While the exhibition features iconic heritage sites such as the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, this body of work focuses predominantly on commonplace city scenes, as Hiller documents her interactions with and observations of people and the movements of everyday life. This exhibition also features portraits of famous Russian females such as the Stalin-era poet Anna Akhmatova, and the Romanov Duchesses; Olga, Maria, Tatiana and Anastasia, who were killed with their family during the civil war in 1918.
