Bhai Sukha Singh Nihaang was a great Sikh warrior, who’s story I chose to bring to life in this illustration. In 1740, Sikhs were not allowed to visit the Harmandir Sahib or bathe in the Sarovar (holy waters) as it was taken over by Massa Ranghar, who was put in charge of it by the governor of Lahore. Massa Ranghar dishonoured the Harmandir Sahib by watching dancing girls perform, drinking alcohol and smoking in it. Bhai Sukha singh’s bravery put him forward into disguising himself as a landlord and entering the Harmandir Sahib where he killed Massa Ranghar and brought his head back on a spear to the congregation of Sikhs. This illustration captures the victory march on horseback back to Bikaner.
