Jong-nam’s Son Did Not Want Body Handed over to Pyongyang
.
The son of Kim Jong-nam pleaded with Malaysian authorities not to turn over his father’s body to North Korea, but it “fell on deaf ears”.
.
The plea by 22-year-old Kim Han-sol was shared by several high-ranking Malaysian government officials by early March, The Asahi Shimbun revealed yesterday. .
.
However, the plea “fell on deaf ears” as Malaysian authorities opted instead to secure the release of Malaysian nationals in Pyongyang and repatriated the body in compliance with North Korean demands.
.
On Mar 7, Pyongyang banned the departure of 11 Malaysian nationals, including diplomats, from North Korea.
.
Malaysia retaliated and prohibited North Korean diplomats from leaving the country. .
.
The Japanese newspaper reported that Malaysian government officials began negotiations with their North Korean counterparts on Mar 13. .
.
In the end, they agreed to hand over Jong-nam’s body in return for allowing the Malaysian nationals to leave North Korea. .
.
According to the newspaper, one government source with knowledge of the negotiations said Pyongyang took small tissue samples related to Kim Jong-nam back to North Korea. .
.
Citing a number of unnamed high-ranking Malaysian investigative authorities, the news report said Han-sol agreed to cooperate with DNA analysis to identify his father’s body but told Malaysian authorities that he felt it would be too dangerous for him to personally claim his father’s remains. Instead, he requested that the body be cremated.

Following Warmbier’s Death, Tour Firm to Stop Taking Americans to North Korea
.
At worst, the American college student stole a banner as a souvenir – a prank by any measure elsewhere except North Korea – and paid for it with his life. .Accused of stealing a political banner

.Cause of brain damage and death still unknown
.
University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier booked a five-day cultural tour to North Korea with Chinese company Young Pioneer Tours for late December 2015.

After completing the tour, he was detained at the airport on his way out of the country to Beijing on Jan 2, 2016.

A state-run news agency released a short, grainy video with a shadowy, unrecognisable figure that was said to show Warmbier stealing a banner from a wall in his hotel.

Pyongyang alleged that he had stolen a political banner and claimed that Warmbier was perpetrating a hostile act against the country after entering it under the guise of tourist.

On Feb 29, 2016, Warmbier apologised in a public confession that may have been forcibly staged by the North Korean government.
.
He said that a member of his Ohio church had promised him a $10,000 used car for the act and that he had been further encouraged by one of his college’s secret societies, the Z Society.

Warmbier said, “I beg that you see how I was used and manipulated” and “I was used by the United States administration like many before.” On Mar 16, 2016, Warmbier was convicted in an hour-long trial and sentenced to 15 years of hard labour.

Jong-nam Case

Court proceedings take place in courtrooms, but Friday’s session of the Kim Jong-nam case was held inside Kajang Women’s Prison due to security fears.

The 30-minute proceedings were brought to the prison grounds for case management where the prosecution handed over 44 documents to the defence. Mention of the case before High Court judge Justice Azmi Ariffin was fixed for Jul 28.

Datuk Naran Singh, who is in the defence team representing Doan Thi Huong, said the two accused were present during the case management. “There were interpreters as well as embassy representatives. They (the accused) looked all right,” the lawyer added.

Otto Warmbier

In the light of American student Otto Warmbier’s release several days ago with extensive brain damage, Andersen’s remarks are not very reassuring.

Warmbier, 22, was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour after allegedly attempting to steal a poster while on a cultural tour of North Korea.

When he was finally released after 18 months in prison and sent home to Wyoming, Ohio, on Tuesday, he had been in a coma for the better part of a year.

Kim Jong-nam’s Case Just Got More Intriguing

A secret rendezvous with a secret agent on an idyllic island, hints of a covert plot against North Korea, a brazen Cold War-style assassination by a dictator with chemical and nuclear weapons at his disposal – all the makings of a spy thriller, except that this is the Kim Jong-nam murder case.
. .Meeting with American spy in Langkawi
.
.Suspected vital intelligence in USB memory stick
.
.Possibly silenced for US-backed plot to overthrow dictator

Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reported recently that Kim Jong-nam purportedly met a suspected American spy in Langkawi just four days before he was poisoned. Malaysian investigation authorities are considering this as one of the possible reasons behind his murder.

Citing “investigative authorities and acquaintances” of Jong-nam, the report said he arrived alone in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 6 from Macau.

On Feb 9, he stayed at a Langkawi hotel, where CCTV footage captured him meeting a middle-aged Korean-American based in Bangkok. They parted two hours later.

According to the Asahi Shimbun report, Malaysian investigators had been tailing the American every time he entered Malaysia, suspecting that he had links with a US intelligence agency.

The suspected secret agent had entered Malaysia on the same day that Jong-nam had arrived in the country. Apparently, the two had met in Malaysia several times in the past and now investigators think the link may indicate North Korea’s true motive.
