Power Plant for Scale
The controversial Puna Geothermal Venture power plant provides a sense of scale along with its access road in this view of the upper part of the lava river near Fissure 8 in Kilauea’s Lower East Rift Zone. Measuring using Google Earth, the power plant is around 1,000 feet wide vertically in this view, and ti seems as though the entire thing could fit approximately within the river here. It’s just hard to imagine a river of molten lava so big. The liquid lava river was about the same width as Lake Mead is just about where it meets Hoover Dam. In seeing photos and videos of this and the eruption happening all around it, it’s crazy to think about how this power plant was tapping into geothermal heat from the volcano and then this eruption sends far more heat than it could ever handle flowing right by nearly destroying it. Note that the vegetation is all dead in this view, as it has all been wiped out by the toxic fumes from the degassing lava. It’s pretty miraculous that the power plant largely survived after being surrounded on 4 sides by flows.
