How often can we say that we truly gave it our all?
How many projects or other endeavours are there to reflect on that you had the opportunity to give your very best to?
In my case at least, the opportunity to pour everything you have into accomplishing a goal is rare, and even when the opportunity comes, its hard to look back on a window in time and know that you did everything in your power to succeed.
On the final morning of our elk hunt this year, @loganraeross knelt outside the tent, sick and heaving in the freezing temps. It was the 18th day of hunting, and we had yet to kill an elk. There were challenges, sure, but there always are. We also had the generosity of friends and a work schedule that allowed us to double down in the spring to free up a window in the fall, to enhance our opportunity.
From day one, we expected the hardships, and we'd talked about how important it was that we refuse to quit. I've been very fortunate through my hunting career to notch some great tags on animals I'm extremely proud of, and the only thread that I can find that connects my successes is the refusal to give up before I had to. With Logan never having killed a big game animal, and with her goal being to shoot one with her bow, we knew we'd need opportunities to learn from before she was able to let an arrow fly.
On the last morning, I was absolutely exhausted, and wanted nothing to do with leaving my sleeping bag. I can only imagine it was 100 times worse for Logan, who hasn't centred her entire adult life around hunting and can't lay claim to very much emotional stability.
When she put her pack on in the dark of the last morning, she'd already succeeded. She hadn't quit. She'd dug deep in the snow and the cold, the short nights and long days, the steep hills and muddy trails, and there she was refusing to give in.
The sun rose, a bull bugled, and by 9am, with an hour left in the hunt, Logan's arrow was in its side.
I couldn't be more proud. 📸 @mulemandan @flyingarcher
