Here’s a little post, dedicated to my good friend, excellent ocean going #seafarer, and awesome #waterman, Capt John Benson. Turn up the volume and enjoy the music, too! That #boat in the first frame with the crew wearing yellow shirts, is Capt John out on the water aboard his own boat, doing escort and safety duties, as well as #towing the #HOKULEA.
Now that (most of) the dust has settled, here’s a shout out to John, or as we lovingly call him…”LJ” Few people are aware of what happened Saturday morning with the #hokuleahomecoming and LJ’s ‘coordination’ of bringing the #HOKULEA safely into her final berth on Saturday. Most of the hundreds (thousands) of people on the water had no idea of what was happening behind the scenes. But those of us involved and with VHF radios that were tuned in and monitoring the proper channels for safety and operational reasons, we all knew that LJ was the conductor to this grand orchestra that played some beautiful music Saturday morning. SAFETY FIRST! and everything went very smooth. Nobody got nuts out there. I was hugely impressed by everyone being very respectful of each other’s space on the water. The #USCG boats involved and the many #DOCARE teams that were on the water were busy. But no problems, no rescues, no incidents. It was simply maintaining a clear path in front of the various #canoes as they were each scheduled to proceed into Ala Wai on a predetermined format. LJ and his team of other boats were all working in harmony together keeping all the #voyagingcanoes safe. The DOCARE and USCG were taking direction from LJ only as needed. But they all worked great together as a team. An pic event occurred and went off with few, if any, major problems. Credit to Capt John Benson for making this all happen as beautifully as it did. Mahalo to you LJ!!! #pvs #polynesianvoyagingsociety #polynesianvoyagers #kanehunamoku #halauholomoana #hawaiipilotsassociation #HawaiiNewsNow #KHNL #khnlsunrise #KGMB #keahitucker @thepilotspio #maritime #maritimepilot #maritimeindustry #seafarer
