@Regrann from @kensmithworkshop - HAIR GARDENS, From the Archive, 1998
The New York Times "If You Go to a Downtown Bar . . . "
I was invited by Monica Minoui to submit work for a group show on the subject of hair at Max Fish on the Lower East Side. My proposal was a series of hair gardens.
_ “These hair gardens are based on the notion that hair design and garden making are related cultural manifestations, involving personal expression, the fashion dictates of taste-making, and a willful manipulation of an organic growing medium. Both gardens and hair involve functions of social display, ideology, desire, sex, power, denial, pretense, ethnicity, and health.
Appropriating both the imagery and presentation style of fashion magazines, the hair garden proposals include: Bouffant Topiary, Ear Hair Rockery and Chest Hair Maze. Deploying a breezy fashion-text, the hair gardens encourage you to “puff out that hair, let it grow and prune it into fantastic ornamental topiary forms,” “stop washing, let the dirt and rocks collect and let those ear hairs grow,” and “don’t wax, just twist and curl it into a labyrinth from your belly to your neck.” - #regrann
