With the summer coming to a close, and three of my children transitioning to three new schools, this has been a very busy household. To add to life’s milestones, my 14 year old is now the proud recipient of a full set of braces on his teeth. As a grateful, former metal mouth, I had braces as well for a few years and remember the pain and suffering associated with slowly aligning a mouthful of crooked teeth.
I tried my best to share tips and advice for surviving with braces to my teen, but as we all know, teens are highly skilled, infinitely experienced, intelligent creatures that require little to no advice from anyone. For his first weekend of living with his new dental companions, we stocked the house with yogurts of every variety, ice cream and my little man’s arch nemesis, Mrs. Food Guy’s homemade applesauce (which little man still refuses to sample).
Scoffing at our soft offerings of sustenance, my teen requested real food, insisting that he had no use for liquified meals. Happy to support his choice, I made my son’s favorite weekend meal, breakfast burritos filled with all manner of solid chewy delights. An hour later, his faced wracked with pain and regret, he had finished roughly half of the burrito. Maybe when he hits his thirties, he will realize the old man knows a thing or two.
For dinner tonight, I decided to take some pity on my boy’s sore jaw. Tonight’s dinner is jalapeno smoked sausage from Fischer’s Meat Market in Muenster, Texas (if you find yourself near Muenster, make a point out of stopping in here), fried sauerkraut topped with a dollop of crème fraiche and braised red cabbage with apples. I figure, he can at least eat the cabbage and apples without suffering too much or having to resort to a liquid meal.
