By now, you’ve all heard that the Keystone 1 Pipeline has leaked over 220,000 gallons of crude onto the beautiful South Dakota prairie and surrounding farmland (although most estimates put the number upwards of 600,000!). News agencies are trying to downplay the incident by calling it “a couple thousand barrels” and saying the leak happened ”in the middle of nowhere...but let’s be real:
There are thousands of people living in the vicinity of this leak, including the entirety of the Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota Oyate, AND this leak occurred in the middle of a vast wetland. The wetland may have been converted to farmland, but the water is still there.
I’d like to tell you about something that the oil companies hope you don’t know: the hyporheic zone. This is the zone under any body of water in which the surface water and ground water meet. It happens all the time...rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands ARE NOT CLOSED SYSTEMS!! They are constantly flowing in to and out of each other. They are all connected; they are one.
A “surface leak” of this poisonous crude...filled with frightening toxins such as benzene, chromium, iron, mercury, nickel, sulfur, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene...NEVER stays on the surface. It seeps in to the hyporheic zone, which then leaks in to the surrounding wet soil, which then flows in to our creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds and yes, right into our drinking water.
Also, do you think the farmer who owns this land is going to abandon this field? Of course not! He needs all the space he can get, so after the spill is superficially “cleaned up,” he will plant crops which will pull all of these heavy metals into their root systems and on to our dinner tables.
The fossil fuels industry is committing genocide. And they’re trying to build ANOTHER KEYSTONE PIPELINE! Please, please stand with us against these threats!
