Album Review: Project Baby 2 by Kodak Black
This may be the most surprising album I've reviewed so far this year. I came in with really low expectations following a quick turnaround from Painting Pictures (which was like maybe a 5) and was shocked by the quality of this release. Kodak finally got away, for the most part, from the poor subject matter that had crippled his career. Yes he still slurs his words and mumbles at times but he's at least talking about real shit. Whether he's contemplating the price of fame, expressing the desire to change his lifestyle to better support his son, or calling out past friends who deserted him there is some real content here. On the opener Versatile he basically vents for 7 mins over a fantastic instrumental. He then continues to impress with Change My Ways, 6th Sense, and his best song to date Roll in Peace. "You don't even believe in Jesus, why you got a Jesus Piece" 🔥. This group of tracks really stood out along with Unexplainable which is my favorite instrumental and we see Kodak trying to explain his complicated situation to those who believe he's changed and the money now controls him. Of course there are pitfalls on here that bring it back to earth. There is a stretch of "love songs" which isn't exactly what I want to hear from Kodak. His voice does not easily lend itself to sensual subject matter. Although I didn't hate these tracks we did get some suspect singing attempts and an all time bad first verse on Don't Wanna Breathe. And of course we have Kodak's typical detractors of slurring and underpronouncing words. But overall I did definitley enjoy this project much more than I thought I would. Kodak really converted on a lot of catchy hooks and brought a lot of passion on Project Baby 2. He's officially converted me into a fan and given us an album with real replay value and more good tracks than bad.
Best Tracks: Roll in Peace, Unexplainable, Versatile, Transportin', 6th Sense
Worst Tracks: First Love, No Codefendant, Don't Wanna Breathe
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
