✨Interested in living and working in Hawaii for a few months? You can! There's a magical community on the Big Island, KALANI, which translates as "Heaven on Earth." ✨Kalani is a non-profit, volunteer-supported retreat center. As a volunteer, I work 30 hours a week in the kitchen in exchange for room and board. Volunteers have access to unlimited classes: yoga, hula, lei making, figure drawing, writing, and more. And on top of that, it's immersed in the Hawaiian rain forest, a short bike ride to black sand beaches, and just miles from an active volcano. People from around the world live and work in community here. Many find themselves taking some time away from their busy lives. I've met teachers, doctors, architects, writers, and film makers. I've met some who've sold all their belongings and leapt into the unknown like the Fool, and others moving through massive transitions, changing careers, moving through a divorce, or mourning the loss of a loved one. But regardless of where we're all coming from and why, we're all here, in some way or another, to refill our cup with the medicine of Hawaii.
✨For me, New York City no longer felt sustainable and nurturing for my growth. Today marks three weeks that I've been here. In just a short amount of time, I've felt myself soften, but sense that many more layers are to be shed. It's been very uncomfortable, even painful at times, but also exciting and liberating. I'm learning to be super patient and open with the process, letting go of intentions and ambitions, and re-learning how to surrender to and enjoy the ride. ✨To learn more about volunteering at Kalani, just google "kalani Hawaii volunteer." And maybe I'll see you soon?
